"That storm we had last night 'was a corker," remarked one aptain. to the Whig, "and the big sessels, as' well ns the smaller ones, were forced to go into shelter." One good reason for believing this to be the case, 14 the fact that he had i>een sentenced to three years in the penitentwary for theft, and he succeeded in making his escape, while awaiting his removal to the big prison. However, the police have heen potified in the various citi and towns, to' keep their weather eve open for him, and to nab him, if he happens to come thie way. tohetts pleaded guilty to breaking dry goods store of McMahon & Granger's, in London, and also admitted having bad a hand in a darinly ro'syery in the coal and wood yard of John Green, also in that city. Kingston, Aug. 9.--(To the Editor): I noticed" in youl issue of the 6th inst, a statement made by the Town Watchman concerning the comparatwe results of th. public pod separate school, candidates at the present high school entrance examinations. After yuoting the percentage of successful separate school candidates as seventy- eight per cent. and successful public school candidates as sixty-six per cent. the Lampman attributes the cause of the greater separate school percentage to the fact that in the se- parate school of the city the classes are smaller and, therefore, tie teach- ors can give more individual atten- girl, In 1876, he moved to Winmpeg, (tion. I beg to inform the Lampman that he has the actual situation pre- cisely reversed. The total number of 'separate school teachers in this city is thirteen and over 700 students are enrolled in these schools, In St. Mary's six teachers and the average number of * pupils per teacher w 45, Through overerowd- ing, the principal of this school is compelled to teach junior and | senigr fourth classes combined, totalling fifty students and hence he cannot de- vate much more than sixty per cent. of the school day to the entrance class. In St. Viecent's Academy, sim- ilarly, there are only four teachers and the senior teacher is handicapped also with a junior fourth, in the same form with the swmiors. Does the Lampman consider that these separ ate schools have small forms and that the teachers can give more individ- ual attention than those of public schogls ? L I am informed: that the public schools in the city have ten teachers, and that in every public sehool in the city the entrance class is in a separate form by itself so that the entrance teachers can devote the en- tire day to them. Moreover in only 3 year, did the attendance in the entrance class exceed forty students while in Vietor- in and Central schools, there were slightly over thirty studedts. The Lampman will require to search some other avenue for the cause of the higher percentage of successful separ- ate school candidates.--~A Separate School Representative. MARRIED AT ST. MARY'S.
