WITH KINGSTON'S CLAIM TO HAVE "THE GOODS" When Board of Education Proposes to Turn Out Non-Residents--D. I, Rogers Writes on the Subject. Kingston, Sept. 260+(To the Edi tor) ~The proposed action of the Board of Faucation, of excluding all non-resident pupils from the Collegi- ate Institute is not at all consistent with the spirit of the slozan accepted as the best to advance Kangston's in: torent: "Kingston's got he goods; call up Kingston." The board should consider the mat- ter carefully before making it public that such a great educational centre as Kingston 1s supposed to be could not find accommodation for about H non-resident pupils. No doubt the position is somewhat perplexing, but surely there is some other remedy than the one mow proposed. The County of Frontenac's position as regards hher education is excep- tional for our Collegiate Institute is in the village of Sydenham, about sixteen miles north of Kingston, and six municipalities; Pittdourgh, Wolfe ls jand, Howe Island, Garden Island, Portsmouth and the township of King- ston, who pay by far the larger por tion of the divinity rate, at no direct benefit from it, as they find it more advantageous, for many reasons, to pay the high tution fees chayBed by the board the maximum fee being £30. a year, It is not doing justice to the schol ars who have been attending the she. will reside in future. NID GLOVES - Filey We are special {at tem o'clock on the morning of the school for years to be obliged to break away from old associations and look for anether school, especially af- ter a month's attendance, And where will they go ? Sydenham high school is overcrowded now, and the inspector says better accommoda- tion is required, or he will report against the school. In the past few yoars we have spent thousands of dollars in renovating and improving the building and surroundings, and also engaged a fourth teacher, All considered, the cost to the county has about doubled in the past 7 or 8 years, Unfortunately the tendesicy of the ris- ing wewveration is away from the farm, to other callings in life. Whether it is faulty systems of education or unjust and discriminating legislation against our interests, its a wise man and a public benefactor who can solve the yuestion, : It's a self-evident fact that the agri cultural education of our youth been sadly neglected. If could wealize what somo of the European countries are doing in the interest of agricultural science, it might spur us into action. We have the agricultural lege at Guelph, which is doing 4 dood work and is being appreciated more every year to such an extent that it is filled to overflowing, and has we President Creelman reports that there are more applications this vear than! ever. If so why not have a branch es | tablished in Eastern Ontario, where | the nature of the soil, the adaptabil ity of the locality to certain lines of farming, all argues that we should have such an institution mn the east. Such being the case I would make the suggestion that the Ontario gov: ernment buy the Sydenham Iigh School for that purpose and the county, with the proceeds, join the city for high school purposes, and provide ample accommodation for all. The subject has too wide a scope to attempt to do justice to it in a short article, but I think the scheme is feasible, and would be an advan. tage, too, from an economic stand- point. | would like to have a public expression from our energetic M.P.P's, on the matter and from any others in- terested I).
