MacTAVISH REVERED . FORCEFUL SERMON, "For I determined not fo Anew any- thing among 'you, sve esus Christ re Him crucified."--1 Corinthians ih, 2. Rev, Dr. MacTavish chose the above text, at the service, in Cooke's church on Sunday morning, and a more fit ting one could not have been selected for the occasion, as the services of the day marked the twenty-fiflh - anmiver- of the ordination of the pastor, the fifth anniversary of his induc tion, as pastor at Cooke's church. The services were bright and helpful, the choir rendering a special programme of music. Solos were rendered Mrs. J. Evans and Allan Lemmon. The members of ithe church have made arran ts for a social, which will. be the school room, tor night, to obsirve the pastor's auniver- sary. A special programme has beén prepared, and a most profitable time is being looked forward to by the members, It was a most eloquent and forceful sermon which Dr. MacTavish delivered at the morning service--an appeal for the saving of the world, through Jests | go Christ,~ Christ crucified, to save the world. The speaker had heen called as a minister, to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ, and he hoped that this would ever be the central theme of his preaching. He desired to ever keep this in the foreground. It had been kept in the foreground during the years of his pastorate, and if the sermons _ had not been fruitful, the fault had been in the preacher, and not in the subject. This theme could not be exhausted. It was like a spring of water, refreshing everyone who par- took of it.. There was no other sub ject upon which a preacher could speak upon, as "Jesus Christ and Him crucified." What other subjects could a man discuss week after week ? Jf that of sciepce was taken up, on Sun- day, and once during the week, the man would be broken down, and his bearers would have become tired of if. if polilieal questions were taken up, at a time when there was no election on, in three months' time, the speaker would have exhausted himself, and the patience of his hearers. It was not so, however, in speaking on Christ's great remedy for sin. Trus, the church attendance might be small: er than it should be, but, nevertheless, there was not a subject a man could discuss, week after week, as this great central theme of the gospel of Jesus not difficult to account for this. The character of Christ was so beautiful that it was always interesting. Those who did not believe in Him, felt that it would he better for them if they did. He was the greatest physician of all, one who never failed in His diag- nosis ol as case. an 8 ry es men h not give sme? ta Pa we could point to Him, Who is the bread of life. Men are Ehirsting for something the world could not give them, and we could point them to the water of life. Men were groping in the dark, know- ing not which way to turn. Was it not a 'blessing, that we were able to point them to God, so that they might walk in the light, and stumble no more. The gates of paradise were closed to some men, and it was in {deed a great blesding, to point . to Him, who said, "1 am the Way.' One great reason for making this theme the central point in preaching was that there was no other subjest so effective. Wherevor it was proclaim ed, it served to break down the stronghold of sin. Incidents in past history, were related by the speaker, to prove this to De so. In his ve Fog remarks the preacher said that to have a beneficial result, the preacher must be listened to sym pathetically. #f a person came to the service with this attitude, "well, here I am," they could not expect any Len- eficial result, but if before coming, they prayed earnestly, that the preach- er mi*ht have a we for them, tnen ne felt sure that Cod would hear these prayers, and no matter how faulty the sermon might he, thew would not yo away from the service without having derived some paod. ing far PITH OF THE NEWS.
