They are equipping | «heir properties with the very la! macainery, an] will handle and treat : . te : ' their ore in the most scientific man- { per. From the very outset, they plan { to ship 1,000 tons of ore daily,' and | tnside six months they expect to in crease this to 2,000 tons day. ! Previous to the taking over of these mines the American syndicate had ex- i haustive reports prepared by such well known authorities as Dr. Robert Bell, for many years the Canadian govern- ment geologist and one of the most widely recognized mining authorities in the world; by Professor R. Carr { harris, late professor of enfinecring ut the Roval Military College, King- ston, * and engineer for the Quebec | government, etc; and a third report { was made by J. G. McNulty, anoth- or well known mining engineer. The reports of the three were so uniform: ly favorable that the properties were purchased: apd at the presdnt time ex- tensive plaps- are being undertaken for their immediate develofiment. The com any will lvls the ore: bw vail to Kingston, where. it will be loaded . on hoats for shipment to Clevelend. and other lake ports. Careful estimates show. tht this ore can be laid down at Cleveland at' a much lower eowt than the ore from the iron ranges in Wisconsin, Minnesofa and Norther Michigan. 3 In addition to the cheapness with which the ore can he mined, treated and shipped, there are practically in exhaustible quantities. In ose ore body in the Wilbur property there 'is over 6,300,000 tons of ore, This quan- tity is practically in. sight. In addi- tion, they estimate that on the bal anve of the Wilbur property investi- gated there is in the neighborhood of 40,000,000 tons. The other properties will largely increase this total, thus indi ¢ that the supply of ore is almost unlimited, Altogether, the decision of the Haw- thorne Silver & Iron Mines, Limited, to develop: the iron ore bodies in East. ern Ontario means that this part of the country will become one of the most important sections of Ontario, i silk ribbons, all colors, 10e. vard. Getting no satisfaction, they will appeal to the Dominion zov- ernment, WHAT HE SAW IN CANADA. Struck by the Enormous Resources of the Country. London, Sept. 98-H. W. Just, secretary of the imperial conference, has returned from Canada, where dur- ing his stay of eight weeks he has traversed the continent from Mon- treal to Vietoria and from Montreal to Halifax, thus, as he said, gaining a birdseye view of the dominion as a whole. He was much impressed with the vastness, the resources, the enormous possibilities of the country, the buoy- ancy and the aléettuess of the popula- tion everywhere, and the great variety 'and picturesqueness of the scenery. Everywhere he noticed the greatest keenness to exploit rapidly the na- tional wealth of dominion, wheth- er agricultural or mineral, and to fink together its various ' parts by improved means of communication in the west. ; He was greatly struck with the pro- gress, settlement, aetivity in trade and the rapidity with which provision is made in towns regarding public utili- ties, now largels owned and operated by the municipalities themselves, such as lighting, power, rosdmaking, | street cor service, and the much-used telephoge. He noticed an eager rivalry between the various cdutres of popu- lation. : Throughout the journey he observed a strong desire for more extended com- munication in trade with the mother country, and for greater participation on the part of British investors and British manufacturers in Canadian in- dustrial development, hitherto too largely reserved to Americans, and for more frequent visits from Great Dri- tain's representative men. The Canadian government had great- ly facilitated his tour by arranging that John Mel). Mowat, Kingston, should accompany him to the west. Wedded at Niagara Falls.
