Prince Edward Is land had never had a divoree, and the reason was that the divoree court eof that province was really the lieuten- ant-governor-in~council, and less acces- sible than the ordinary court, which some persons wished to have establish- ed throughout Candda. Courts multiplied divorces. In Eng- land there had been great increase in divorce since 1857, when the divoree court was established. In the United States the increase had been phenome- nal, so there was now one divorce for every twelve marriages, and present rate * the proportion would soon be one to six. In France, since the establishment of divorce eourts the increase had been rapid that it looked as though the record of the Un- ited States would be exceeded. No one would w ant Canadians to travel the same road and at the same speed ag the United States and France, but that would »w the establish- ment' of divorce courts throughout Canada. Perhaps the expense had something to do with it, though the cost of presenting a "case to the senate was not much more ex- pensive than the proves before =a court.
