The pre- | mier had said that never again would | TT thin country be a supplant for tariil | favours from the southern republic, and he meant what he sand. But the If state elections indicated that the peo: US. le were not satisfied with the Payue tariff. One state, Massachusetts, had "declared indirectly in favour of reci- "procity in the election of a governor 8 who advocated it. The republican B party had to do something, and Mr. R Taft was moved by humest mmtives B when he opened the negutintions which RR ended as they have. There ought to be however, semblance of sense in what the ponents say when useful legislation is presented. The bill which aims at the prohibition of white phosphorus in the manufacture of matches in Canada was fiercely opposed at the outset, and on the ground that the prohibition would favor an American firm. The minister working on bebalf of an Am- erican competitor ! That was the charge. Of a piece with the state ment, and of presumably sane men, was tHE assertion that the Fielding business arrangement with the Taft government was a scheme to prevent closer trade relations between Canada and the 'Mother Country. Silly, you say ? Well, anything goes in poli- tics, Reason will be restored in the match question when the opponents of the measure have carefully considered all the facts.
