At first there was a sensational rumor that Travers had made his escape and this spread like wild-fire around, but as a matter of fact Sheriff Mowat, with a do- minion office, had quietly removed Travers some time, since yesterday af- terfioon, to the I'nion station, and he is now on his way to Kingston to serve a six-year term, imposed by the magistrate. That this was done with- out consulting the crown attorney or magistrate, when it was well-known he was wanted further as a witness, is another edition of the sensation. "The only reason for such action," said one of the police officials, "is that Travers had been telling too much decided or Detective Duncan said was the most unheard of thing police annals. Sherif Mowat was subpoenned to the police court, this morning, to state why he had removed the prison- er. He said Travers had already been allowed to remain longer than usual in such cases. The Arrival of Travers. Travers arrived at the outgrstation at 1.20 o'clock to-day by fast G.T.R. train. He was accompanied by Deputy Sheriff Jarvis, jr., and a detective. The party travelled second-class. The three stepped off the train, walked across the platform 'and entered the smoker of the suburban. Very few on the platform knew who Travers was, A photographer obtained 'a snap-shot of him after he was seated \n the ear without knowledge of officiale. The ex-bank manager remained very calm, and finished a cigar on the way in, At the city depot, a cab was wailing to take him to the penitentiary. The photographer attempted to get an: otha photo but was foiled by the sheriff who stood in front of the camera. Travers had his hat lied down over his eyes, and the col of his green ulster turned up. The question Travers, in view « i to be returned to Toronto, would be shaved and clipped.
