The maidens smiled a smile of ex- treme satisfaction, the mothers pat- ted their husbands on the backs, and the fathers aod sons vied with each other to see who could yell the loud- est at the Palace rink Thursday af ternoon when Bath Road Beavers won from the Glenburnie Ramblers by the close score of 3 to 2 in the game which practically decided the town- ship hockey championship. The game was gruelling to excess on account of the heavy condition of the ice. The March sun bad wrought havoc with Jit apd while the play was going on it which any- and formed a' slush very diflicult to do thing. The players could not themselves justice as they could scarcely skate, shoot, pass, or keep on their feet. © The large crowd came mostly out of curiosity, expecting to see un repetition of the trouble at (ilenburnie, but everything was peace- ful quiet. At half time the score stood 2 to 1 in favor of the Xam- not extend a sou to back their team, for the Bath Road supporters were so confident of winning t they were willing to bet any money that their team would win, even though they were one goal behind. Barry, the fast centre of the Beav- ers, opened up the scoring «about twelve minutes after the gong sound- ed, by a shot from in front of ' the goal. Bath Road supporters raised a blood-curdling yell, which was drown- ed in a still greater one from the throats of the Glenburnie rooters when McCallom scored on & pass from Smith. MeCallum sconad the second goal before hall time on a pass from Vair. For filteen minutes after the teams went on the ice after the face-off in the second half neither could score. The supporters of the Bath Road team were beginning to get restless, although their con never wavs ered. Will Decide Whether to Adopt a Four-year Scheme--To Changé Bydaw Respecting Sanding of Walks. The board of works, yesterday after noon, discussed the question of road building, but decided to hold a spe cial evening session next week, to go fully into the matter. It will be cided Mhether to recommend to the city council a scheme of road con- struction to extend over four years, or to just outline a scheme for the present year. The members discussed materials, but although they have a bateh of communications in regard to the maiter, they are agreed that the only way to come to a decision to view some of the roads in other places that have been recently ecom- structed. Hereafter all romds are to be constructed, here, under the local improvement system. It was degided to ask the city so- lieitor to amend the building by-law to allow the second storey to be cov- ered with shingles, A house on the lot the city pur chased for the extession of Barrie street, requires to be moved off the ex- tension line. It was decided to offer it for sale by tender, purchaser to re move it, The committee will make an inspee- tion of walks about April lst, The engineer reported that during the winter it had cost $200 to sand the walks of the city. Ald. Bailey wanted the by-law changed to provide thai the walks should be sanded by the works department. The present by-law required the citizens, individu. ally, to protect pedestrians from dun- ger on the walks in fromi of their pro- perty, This by-law was ridiculous, Ald. Railey said. He doubted if citi- zens could be compelled by law to sand their walks. get a report from the rity solicitor on the matter, Two tenders purchase of stone crusher. the other $100. tao sell the crusher, too small. : In attendance at the meeting were Alds. London Advertiser - J. W, Flavelle, head of the William Davies company, seconded the anti reciprocity resolution of the Toronto Board of Trade. Mr. Flavelle doesn't like the agreement because it reduces the duty on pork and gives the farm- er thin market for hogs. Some five years ago & statement was made in court showing the dividends paid on stock in the Wm. Davies company's packing house for thirteen years. The lowest dividends paid in that.time was 15 per cent. One year it went up to 120 per cent., and the average for the thirteen years was over 050 per cent. The announcement made by one the prominent members on the gov- ernment side of the house that the trade preference which Canada grants to Britain is to be increased from 33 per cent. to 40 per cent. is welcome news, The result of the proposed reciprocal agreement with the United States will be a raiding of the cost of dairy pro- dpets in. the urban communities. Tw farmer will derive the direct benefit. comet Bg of the tariff against AR should provide some compensation for the residents of the towns and cities the may have to Sontzibute to the a earnings of the agriculturists. Mr. Fielding has evidently been con- vinced that there is a strong feeling in favor of an enlar t of the British preference. We believe Jat preference should be increased 50 per cent., and we hope to see Seo the budget is brought down a strong ion of opinion from all over Canada that the increase should not stop short of that. mi ------ And the Fallacy Ended.
