Meerschaum, suys a British sular report from Irague, tinually getting scarcer, which some four years ago rose forty per cent. and still remains high, is due, according to a London au thority, "to the growing demand in the United States, where of late years there has been a tendency among smokers to disregard cigars in favor of a pipe." As a result it is said that "the large industry which has flourished in Vienna, Budapest, Nur cmburg, Paris and the Thuringian town of Ruhbla seems endangered, and England has been compelled to turn from the meerschaum to clay and briar. The meerschaum pipe smoker something of a philosopher, none of the hurry of the man with the. "elitty,"" or , the leisare of the dignitary with the long churchwarden and he has no desire to deprive others of the pleasure that he enjoys. Tol erance, in fact, is his creed. The vil lain among smokers, by all tne best traditions of the stage, always flicks the ashes from a cigarette, and the monopolist chews on a big black ci gar. Our pipe smokers would never bring dire disaster to Europe by robbing her of her meerschaum, as our rich are charged with robbing he of her art treasures. lut the blame on the Turk; he will neither develop his meerschaum mines nor permit for ¢ign capitalists to do so.
