At the rear of the storp 'there is a stable belonging to the dairy com- pany, in which there were nine horses. The animals were removed to safety, ns for 4 time it was thought that per- haps the fire might spread farther. However, the good work of fhe fine men prevented a far move serious beaze. Mr. Kirk was well satisfied with the work of the department, and ex- pressed himself in that manner to the Whig. The fire started near the stairway, at the rear of the store, and made a clean sweep of the stack, and any- thing which was nof destroyed by the! fire, was damaged by the water and] smoke. Had the fire not. been discov-| vred at the lime it was, the buildin would also have been a total loss. and | perhaps other places near by, might! have suffered.
