Save the Youth From Street Evils. Kingston, June §5.--(To the Editor) { --1 vote! with considerable interest a {letter by J. C. McConachie in a recent issue of your valuable paper, in which he took up the question of how to dedl with the boys and girls in our city. This is a most important matter, and should be comsiderexi very serious- Iy. 7 a recent census, taken by the Young Mens' Christian association, it was found that we have over 1,000 boys between the ages of thirteen and seventeen years. Over 600 of these are working lads, and a great many of them are on the streets at night until a late hour. One thing which impressed me very strongly when I came to Kingston fearly in 1910 was the fact that so | many young boys and girls were roam- {ing ihe stieets at night, and 1 have yet to find the city where such a farge proportion of the younger popu- tion are allowsd such privileges on the streets at night as in our own city of Kingston. It would seem as if the hommes. were completely obliterated. And yet, after all, if the homes are not providing the attractions ieces- sary "to keep the boys and girls at hom, where are they to go? Owing to the lack of accommodation the Y.M.C.A. has not been able in the past to do the work for boys which it would like to do. The Y.M.C.A. has primarily been doing a work for the voung men of the city, although it has done a very comsiderable work for boys, yeven with the limited accommo- dation at its disposal. The work should be equally' as 'much for the boys as it is for the men. Many boys have come to me during the----past.. winter months,' after the hours 'when the younger boys are al- towed in the building, asking to be allowed to spend the evening or a part of it in the YM.C.A. On being | told that they cannot come mto the! building at nights, owing to lack of | rooms, their response is, '"Where will | we go, must we go down town ¥ This where we are up against a real proposition, as we cannot drive the boy down town, pichaps to places which are anything but uplifting. The result is that we have been forced to compromise to a certain extent, and have had to deprive the older mem- bers of some of their privileges in or- | der to assist to some degree some of the hoys. I wish to state most emphatically that the citizens of Kingston do not hilly realize the great importance of this problem, and it is surely up to us as parents to take hold of this questiom. in. a businesslike manner, and deal with it as if we had some realization ref the consequences to the Boys aml girls of our city, What, then, can the citizens da ? "The way has been opened up where by the Young Mens' Christinn associ- ation can uso their entire building for heir own immédiate work, and itis the purpose of the board of directors to have 5 complete and separate de- partment for the boyss where several hundred boys can be accommodated. The ladiss' auxiliary have undertaken to raise 5 good proportion of 'the amount required {o fiance this work, An expert man will be engaged as boys' work secretary, whose entire time will be given over to work for th! boys of the city, be they members of the YM.C.A. ownot. This is «a community wide work, the value of which cannot be estimated, as it will he very far reaching in its effects: To this end the ladies are starting out this week to solicit and collect subscriptions from the mothers of the city, although no one will he debarred from giving to such a great and splen did cause Mr. McConachie in his let tev dealt with the matter of the timi dity of the general public in support. ing the institutions in our midst which are endeavoring to assist in the work of the conservation of our vouth, and I feel that he wae fight when he stated that "every good work will be heartily supported the moment it seen to be good and necessary. is Is of proving this assertion than we have at present in the plan as spoken of above. Let 'us strengthen our hold on the boys, and help to make them strong citizens, Those wishing to assist, can very materially lighten the burden for the ladies by sending their _subseriptions | in, ns the ladies are anxious to have this work completed by thd first of July. Some bright mind has suggested that the citizens save all waste pa ir, which can be called for the Ae of June. This the ladies can have balid and sold at a fairly good price. A considerable amount may be raised in this way if the citizens will Co-oper- ate and turn over all old newspapers and other waste paper to the ladies auxiliary. a wish to thank you, Mr. Editor, for the privilege ¢ king for the boys. ~E.
