JOHN McKAY | LACK OF A DAY LOAD I= 5 IL {DISCUSSED AT CONFERENCE! OVER CHEAP POWER. 'JUNE JULY § AUGUST Daily . | -- 1 Board of Trade Representatives Satisfied That the Civic Committee | is Doing All Possible to Get Cheap | Power, = = The board of trade 'representatives [ho were present at the conlerence | {with the light, heat and power com-| | mittee on Thursday evening, expressed | {themselves as well satisfied that the! jeivie committee was doing everything | {io get cheap power to Kingston, and | that there would be still 'further de- | {lay until the Hydro Electric commis- | {son gave the committee a deiinite! 'loffer. in attendance .at the conference | {were Alo. Elliott, Harty, MeCaan, | Kigney aod Toye, of the civic com-! | igor br. E. Ryan'and R. A. Mec. | {1elland, of the board of trade: Wil-!| {liam Cook, superintendent of the | ominion Textile company, and H. C. { Viekle, superintendent of the street {railway company. Ald. Elliott first gave an outline of | Always are pleased with our cholee!what the committee had been doing | --it's big\ It's up to now. If there's during the past year and a halt | anything new. igs here, and it's! Several offers had 'been received from | easy to make a home look homelike |the Seymour company, but until the and comfertable. | Hydro- Electric commission gave its §i- | nal offer the committee comtd not act. | At present, Ald. Elliott stated that the commission's engineers were at | work on the High* alls Propasition, and were tq make a report shortly. 'Dr. Kyan atated that he wap con vinced the committed had done every- thing possible in the way of trying to get cheap power for Kingston. Mr. McLelland said the same. Ald. El liott replied that he was pleased that the board of trade representatives had endorsed the committee, for this would show the citizens that every- thing that could be done had been. the delay was' not due to any ne gligence on (he part of the comthit- Lee, H.--€--Niokle; of the street railway company, (addressed the conference, and gave some interesting facts con- cerning cost of production by. steam. He stated that in the United States electrical power was being produced u weveral places at 75 of.a cent per» kilo-watt-hour. Street railway companies in England produced it by steam for less than 1.50 cents, the rate quoted the city by .the : Sey mour company for power on the kilo- watt-hour basis. In, the United States it was hoped to be able to produce it" at 15 of a cent. Kingston was giving the street railway company power at 1.20 cents. The fact that it could do this 'showed that the plant was being well run. Mr. Nickle claimed that Kingston coulll do still fetter by finding a day load. - At pre- sunt it had a 700 horsepower engine standing still for ten hours a day, net earning one dollar. The city, he claimed, could afford to sell power to small manufacturers at four cents a kilo-watt-hour and make money. This would -establi ha fair day load- for quite a number of places would be lad to take power" at that figure. {IT Kingston plasit had a full day load [the cost of production would be re- duced to 1.10 or 1.15 cents a kilo- watt-hour. In regard to the Seymour com- pany's offer Mr. Nickle stated, that it would not be fair to allow' that company to - supply the large con- summers at a cheap rate, while the {small powir consumers of the city would have to pay a high rate of ten cents a kilo-watt-hour. The "little fillows' should be taken care of, and he believed that the city should| give the power at four cents. Ald. Rigney agreed that if the plant {had a more unifofin load it equld {give a better rate. Dr. Kyan wanted to know much power the city used at sent. The chairman replied that in December, the heaviest month, the load, "according to Prof. Willhoft, reached 900 horse power for a short time. Mr. Kesry, of the Seymour compuny, computed that the cily at present was only using 600 horse power. Ald. Elliott stated that. Mr. Kerry had made the statement that he doubted if a market for more than 1,200 horse power could be found in Kingston. The engineer sent down hy the Hyqro-Electric commission had se- ported that Kingston could take 4, 100 horse power. This latter amount he said, was out of all reason. i M#. 'Nickle was of the opinion that the eastern municipalities could preduce cheaper' power by steam if th se hireabouts would get together atl erect and maintain a central pow- er plant. : * Store Closes 5 O'clock.
