Goodspeed, Jr., ar rived here from Doston on Wednesday, and oh Thursday established a record for fishing that will last all season. He was fishing off the dock at his summer home on Tremont park, using small minnows for bait, and left his polé'for a few minvtes while he went to converse with some friends at a neighboring wharf. Whilé thus engag- | ed his pole was observed to be sailing | serenely out towards the channel, and no skiff being available a_motor boat started in pursuit. As the boat ap- proached the pole, it (the pole) disap coronation has arrived at London, Ont., after being fifty-two days on the road. He hopes to make the remaining distance in {ime to maky connections | to reach England ig time for the event. His purpose in going to Eng- Inand is to induce the soccer assodia- tions to offer a perfetual challenge cup for competition among the Can- adian football teams. Tt is expected that he will pass through Kingston within the neyd two weeks. New Yacht Watertown, The sailing yacht Watertown, baill at Philadelphia, Pa., for the Crescent Yacht Club, of Watertown, N.Y., as cup challenger, was launched on Monday, aud will reach Watertown in a day or two, The Watertown will be a 'much faster yacht than the old Crescent, say her builders. She is 22 feet 3 inches water line, 35 feet over all, has a beam of 7 feet 1 imth, and a draft of 5 feet 3 imches. Her dus,lace- ment is 110 cubic feet, or 6,520 pounds. Her sail area will be in the vicinity of 576 square feet. She is a larger boat than the Cres- cent and will be at her best probably in a strong 'breeze. She has an easy form of hull with her displacement so distribmted 58 to allow her being driv en without excessive way making and a hull easy to drive in rough weather. George Games Postponed. | The second Monday evening game, in the Mercantile series, which was to have been played, last evening, at the cricket field, had to be postponed on account of the rain. 'Wormwiths and Railrgaders were to have battled "in their first game this season and, ac cording to the constitution, it will also have to be played at the end of the season. A junior game in the Sunday school series had to be post- poned also. The Printers and Bethel had a game arranged but it had to be called off. : m-- Slim Collections in City League. This performance {was repeated several times, and finally the pole was secured, when a pike imeasuring eighteen inches was found on the end of the line, and was safely | landed. But the strange part of the | story is yet to come. A perch measur ing six or eight inches was fastened firmly to the hook, and had evidently been swallowed by the larger fish, so that a douhle catch, both of respect able size, was a result of the single haul. The pike might just as well have disgorged the perch while in the water, and thus retained its freedom, but the voraciousness for which he is noted led him t¢ hang on to his prey until escape was impossible, Teacliers' Salaries. Ottawa Citizen, It iz proposed to tow the wreck of | the Maine out into the Atlantie ocean and sink it in deep water, where it will never more be heard of. It is to be hoped that before the hull is final ly made away with some definite re- port will be made as to whether the explosion which wrecked it came from the outside or the inside. It would be a matter of justice to Spain to remove the stigma which has attached to that nation. as a result of the allegation that the sinking of the Maine was due to a treacherous attack while in. an ostensibly friendly harbor. If the deci sion should be against Spain, then it would only be fair to publish the evi- tience discovered which may lead 'to that conclusion. nd i-- Wages in the West.
