Wheat, con- sisting of both spring and fall varie- ties, is cultivated from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans, the largest areas devoted to this class of crop being in the provinces of Saskatchewan, Man- ftoba, Ontario, and Alberta. Oats form one of the principal stock feeds, and along with corn and wheat is quite largely used in the cereal food indus- try. Barley is one of the grain crops that is rapidly coming to the front. Ryé is one of the least important of the cereal grains and its production fs chiefly confined to Ontario. Field pease is @nother of the crops which has helped to swell Ontario's large crop production, about ninety per cent. of this crop belpg raised In Ontario. The production of the buckwheat crop is. greatest in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick, very little being pro- the Western Provinces. Mixed grains foe both grain and fod- der production are grown extensively in Ontario and in some sections of both the eastern and western. pro- vinces. Flax is largely grown in the prairie provinces, and is used as a feed for stock and for the manufacture of lHnen. Southwestern Ontario Is the section which produces most of 'the bean crop; the counties of Ken{ and Elgin supplying nearly one-half of all the beans grown in Canada. SIR JAMES WHITNEY- OUR LIVE STOCK Improvement in All Classes is Reflect ed in Statistics The live stock of Canada is valued at $600,000,000. During the year 1910 there were imported Into Canada 32:7 purebred horses. Of these, 1.956 were of the draft breeds, and 492 of the. light legged sorts. Not only in this way is our horse stock rapidly improving, but it is increas ing at_a reasonably rapid rate, the gain, from 1907 to 1910 being nearly 30,000 head. The increase in 1910 in the value of cattle was $27,000,000. The im- provement is reflected in the increase of trade at' Toronto and Montreal where the cattle marketed show a de- cided improvement in numbers, and a better finish. The increase of trade in cattle at Toronto alone in 1910 over | 190% amounted to 34.539 head. The estimated increase In the value of sheep in Canada in 1910 over 1909 amounts to $84,000. There is, or instance, the making of canoes, which has made Peterborough famous, with its three large factories, and there are other factories In Frederic- ton, Gravenhurst, Penetanguishene, Lakefield and Toronto. Smowshoes are made in Quebec alone, but six factories in various parts of that pro- vince are engaged In their manufac ture; tennis racquets are made at Niagara Falls; the English game -of cricket still has sufficient hold on the affections of Canadians to sup port a factory which makes cricket bats---as an adjunct to the manufac ture of baseball bats. The Industry of sporting goods manufactures has rami fications which bonnect it up with al most every other industry in the coun try. CARRERAS & MARCIANUS CIGARETTES, Limited, Mentroal, Quobes During the ten years from 1800 to 1910 the increase in railway mileage in Canada, was 7.074 miles or 40 per cent. The total mileage is distributed among the various provinces as fol lows Ontario Quebec Manitoba Saskatchewan Alberta British Columbia New Brunswick Nova Scotia Prince Edward Island Yukon . The number of persons hoe on Canadian railroads is about 140,000, their total wages last year being over $67,000,000, 4071 locomotives, and 132,681 cars. Of these nearly 120,000 were freight cars. The freight cars have risen rapidly in numbery since the days of car 'famines, sone seven or eight rs ago. In 1907 there were 107,000; in 1908, 115,700; 1h 1909 there were 117,700; and in 1910, 119,700. Of the freight cars nearly 6,000 were box cars; over 20,000 were flat cars, and over 12,000 were coal cars. THE APPLE TRADE A Canadian Industry That is Assum- ing Large Proportions last owned Ontario is the chief producing pro- vince of Canada, though the produc- tion in the Oganagan Valley, British Columbia; 8t. John Valley, New Brunswick, and the Annapolis Valley is increasing rapidly. The plantings in 'some sections of Ontario are in creasing very fast. The Survey Re- port of the Department of Agriculture for Northumberland County, 1910, gives approximately 10,000 acres for that county alone, fully half of which have not yet produced a crop. Norfolk County is perhaps the best known of all and has made her reputation all within the last six years. Seven years ago she produced practically no first: class fruit at all, but this past season she produced more than 35,000 barrels of good fruit. AGRICULTURAL IMPLEMENTS While the general business in agri cultural implements in the Eastern Provinces has remained pretty much at the same proportion for several years, there have been very large in- creases in the Northwest Provinces. This Is especially true of Saskatche- wan and the northern parts of Mani toba and Alberta. British Columbia has also shown very satisfactory in- creases. for some years past. Not only has the number of machines in creased, but the sizes have slso In- creased. For instance the former self- binder with the six-foot cut has been replaced with the machine of éight- foot cut. The same is also true with regard to harrows, drills, inowers, ete. HON. J. D.
