The water is pouring into her eabins and it is expoeted that her position on the mud bed will remain unchang- ed till the inspectors have viewed her, when it is planned to raise the stesm- er and continue trafic, While there are hints of eriminal pro- ceedings being instituted, it is the gen- eral belief here that Capt. To the herculean efforts of John Frego, Charles P. Williams, of Mas sons, and Rev. Theopalus Wells, of Evans Mills, are given the credit for minimizing the number of fatalitics. John Frego will probably receive his reward in the shape of a medal. He was sitting with bis baby boy on a life raft on the pilot house. His wile was some yards away from him when the boat began to tremble under the inrush of water in the bold. Telling his little boy to cling to the railing on the upper deck, Frego rush 'ed over to where his wife was holding tight to the railing with one hand and clasping her baby, ove and a hali years old, with a viece-like grip in the other. It was several seconds before Frego could pry the child from 'the half senseless woman. He carried it back to the other son, aged three, and told him to hang tight to his brother. When Frego returned to rescue his wife a hand and hat were the only signs of Mrs. Frego visible above the water. After pulling her up on deck, Frego returned to the life saving, clutching waving hands as their own- ers sank beneath the water. He saved more that fifteen by this method. "When 1 woke up this morning | was crying. | couldn't stop. Then 1 went over and kissed my wife and children, I was so happy." This was John Frego's simple state ment of hetoism that will earn for him substantial recognition from many fathers and mothers in Massena who owe their own lives or their children's 16 The stalwart Frenchman, One. women in sheer gratitude for his courage in rescuing her baby threw her arms abou, Frego's neck and kiss- ed him. tw In danger of perishing herself, Mrs, Florence Dowe, of Massena, saved the lives of her two babies. When the boat careened the mother seized the children, aged two and four, and {jumped into the water. While she ® sank in water over her head, she hold the two children above the surface and breasted her way to the shore. Teachers to Wear Crepe. Ogdensburg, N.Y., Aug. 4.--The bo- dies of Miss Harriet A. Parker and Miss Nellie E. Parker were brought here from Massena and taken to the home of their brother, Fredefick Par- ker, in Washington street. The fun- eral was held yesterday at the Me thodist Episcopal church. The Misses Parker were spending their vacation with their aunt, Mrs. Raymond, of Massena. The threes were sitting together on the upper deck of the Sirius when they were startled by the rocking of | the boat, The aunt eried out that she believed the boat was sinking and ran to the other side of the deck. The Misses Parker remained in their seats. Mrs, Raymond clung to: the netting along the rail of the upper side of the while her nieces ¢ found e¥nging to the railing on the other gide of the steamer. At a meeting of the public school teachers of ' dhe sity, il. was decided that all should wear a badge of wourning for sixty days' ont of re spect to the memory of Miss Nellie E.
