ATE A tained in the telegram. fhe announcement was little less than dramatic. Newton was thought to be dead. A body found hanging in the crotch of a tree at Chaumont sev- eral weeks ago had been almost posi- tively identitied by a dozen or more men, among them police officials, em- ployées at the jail who knew Newton previons to his escape from jail, when four .other men got away, and Shel den, his alleged partmer\in crime. All of the circumstances poXited to eer tainty of the identificatiox. Although the body "was there were many facts that Yed to the conclusion that it was that bf Newton | and holes were found in the shirt and] undershirt that led to the belief that a bullet fired by a deputy sheriff at Deépanville at the time Sheldon was recaptured took efiect, There many who doubted, but the men knew Newton were certain. The was buried in the belief that it Newton's and as such the grave been cared for, The story of the man's first arrest and escape is well known. With Shel don he was found in George Irazier's rooms at the Woodruff Hotel during the Knights Templar conclave. He was held for the grand jury on a bur glary charge, and while at the coun- ty jail he enlisted four other men, a- mong them Sheldon, with whom he] escaped. Sheldon was recaptured at] Pepauville the pext night. | Weeks later the dead body was| {found at Chaumont and identified. {Those who doubted the identification said' that the body was that of one of three men who were seen near | Three | Mile Bay. Une man, it was said, had | disappeared, but the story was not credited. 'The officials now have a greater mystery to unravel--that of the identity of the body buried under Newton's headstone. The facts as to Newton's capture at Erie are not known here. It is said that he was arrested on a minor charge and that the police, in searching him, found a paper with an agcpunt of the jail breaking escape and with a picture of Newton print ed with the account. The Erie offi- vials then telegraphed to this city, and for the past few davs the sheriff has been working upen the case. It is expected that, provided Newton will come without requisition papers, he will be brought to this city al once. TO LE T. accommodation APERIENCE amp.
