Gananoque, Oct. 26 --The many friend of P. B. Whitely, the popular agent of the Thousand Island rulway here, wiil be pleased to learn that he was summoned to the head offices of the company in Deseronto, this week, and was given a well-deserved promo- tion, to , the position of auditor, re cently held by Capt. BE William Carpenter, Mr, and Mrs. J. A. Jackson and Clifford Sine are attending the Sunday school cen- tenary convention in Brockville. Efforts are being put forth by the officials of Grace church to have F. McClement, their new pastor, who is not yet ordained, comply with the ne cessary requirements to enable him to be at once ordained for special work. An audit of the books of St. An- drew's church made quite recently, has disclosed the unfortunate fact of a shortage in the books amounting to nearly $500. Gananoque lodge, No. 114, 1.O.OF,, figures their shortage at about $275, and the A.O.U.W, is also short to some extent. Gananoque Canton, No, 12, held a euchre party and smoker, at their quarters, on Tuesday evening. At a special session of the board of directors ob Uiananoque public library, held on Tuesday evening, it was de cided to hold an entertainment in the near future and possibly a series of them during the fall and winter months, Messrs. J. C. Linklater, C, Sine, CC. J. Wilson. and C., H. Hurd were appointed a committee of man- agement. Efforts are also being made to instul one of the government's tech- nical libraries here. This will meet a long-felt need and the mechanics of the town will doubtless avail them- selves of this opportunity of enjoying these valuable works. Rev. A. R. Orser, librarian of Gana- noque public library, has been ap- pointed as delegate from that insti tution to the session of the Eastern Ontario Library Association, to be held in Ottawa on Friday, 27th inst. The library will, on this account, be closed on Thursday evening. Mrs, George Williams, Edmonton, Alta., suffered a severe paralytic stroke, this week, and at latest re ports is in a very critical condition. Word to that effect was received here by her sister, Mrs. Cole, Arthur street. Rey. Henry Gracey, pastor of St. Andrew's church, was in Kingston on luesday. Mrs. Lowery, Brock street, visiting relatives in Cleveland, Ohio, for some time past, returned home yesterday. Mrs, Henry Parker, Charles street, spending some time with her daughter, Mrs, Seymour, has returned home, A M. Murray, Montreal, was in town yesterday. Mr. and Mra. Schuy- ler Lee, of Alexandria Bay, N.Y. are spending a short time in town, guests of Mr. and Mrs. William T. Dustin, Garden street, : Linseed, Licorice and Chlorodyne. Gibson's, The Ontario government has called off all the Farmers' Institute meet- ings for this year. These meetings are held, usually throughout the province between November 15th and December 20th. Denbigh, Oct. 24.--Joseph 'Adams, of Kingston, is enjoying a visit. here with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Jos eph Adams. Miss Genevieve Lang, of loronto, has also arrived to have a visit with her father and relatives here. Messrs J. S. Lane and Albert LockWwopd have arrived home again from North Bay, where they have been engaged about six weeks build- ing a dwelling house on one of the town lots . purchased there by Mr. Lane. Messrs 0. Chatson, P. Stein and W. J. Slater were out at Nap ance last week on business. Harvest thanksgiving service was held by Rev, J. Reble in the Lutheran Church here on Sunday before last and in Raglan last Sunday. Next Sunday he is to conduct divine service in Ladysmith, 'Jue; On his journey there he intends to stay a few days over in Ottawa and to pay a visit to Rev. F. Beer, and some other friends who now re side there. Denbigh is going to lose a couple of its most respected pioneer families. Emil Warlich sold his farm and saw- mill to Dan Donovan, and bought a farm of nearly three hundred acres in Sebastopol township, on which he is now plowing, though he does not intend to move with his family away from here until the latter part of the winter, Joseph Youmans has rented a large farm near Tweed, on which he is now also doing some plowing, and intends to move with his family on it before next spring. Several more of the young men ine tend to leave this week for New Ont- ario, to work in one of the lumber camps there during the winter, as work in this vicinity will be scarce, and most of the farmers are well ahead with their fall work.
