J. P. McInnes, in regard to his resignation. Rev. Mr. Binnie stated that the com- mittee had interviewed Mr. Melnnes, and the latter still pressed for the acceptance of his resignation, The speaker would move that the resignation be accepted, but at the same time, he did so with sincere re- gret, as the charges were in a healthy condition, and Mr, Mclnnes had car- ried out his work well, The motion was seconded Dr. Macgilliveay, who at the session paid a warm tribute work of Mr. Mclnnes. Rev. Mr. Gracey also regretted the fact that Mr. Melnnes saw fit to re- sign. It is altogether likely that the fathers will consider favorably the re quest that the trustees of St. An- drew's church will, it is understood make, that the city pay for the light- ing of the clock on the prominent Scotch church. While the lighting of the clock wil benefit St. Andréw's church and congregation somewhat, it will be of the gremtost epnvenience to titizens generally. Large numbers of citizens nover go as far down town as the city hall, and St. Andrew's church is on the public thoroughfare in the centre' of * the city. The first to be dealt with was that of the king vs. James Campbell, who was accused of stabbing Arthur Johnson, at Perth some time ago. The grand jury enpanelled for the case was John Mur- phy. (foreman), H. Brash, ter, 0. Campsall, W. o bixon, J. L. Goodiriend, J. J. Hogan, R. Kidd, 1 C. Snider and M. Esford entered plea of 'not guilty." The first witness called the complainant He stated that Esiord had come to his house, caught him hy the throat and batfered his face so that he was confined to the house for three or four days as a yesult. When cross-questioned by Weh. Mowat, counse] for the defendant, he said that they had an argument about Worming- ton's wife and daughter calling Is ford's wife names Leorge Medley a son-in-law of Worm ington,' was the next witness ealled. He had gone to the door with his fatherin-law and had witnessed the "scrap." He did not know that any conversation had passed between them before .the fight started. Other wit- nesses for the prosecution were called, including Mrs. Grange, who saw most of the fracas and asserted that while the two men were struggling on the ground, Esford raised Wormington with one hand and struck him with the other. Alma Wormington, complainant, was iu the house Esford called, and went to the doo with her father. He sent her to the back of 'the house to get a spade which belonged to the accused, and when she returned she saw Esford strike her father and grab him by the throat, 2 James case toad, James Dax Corkill, J E. James Esford, had seen Alma the accused, said he Wormington with = shovel which he recognized as his own and asked her for it. She refused, and he said he would see her father. He hunted for some time before he found Wormington and then got him at his house. He asked him for the shove! and Warmington told his daughter to throw it ovr the fence. Wormington had told him he was just as good as the accused, but when Esford chal lenged him tg go out in the road and settle it, he refUsed. Esford said that just as he was turning to go, Worm- ington struck at him. He warded off the blow and caught Wormington by the throat! They fell to the ground together, and in the struggle Worming- ton got Esford's hand in' his mouth nd bit two of his fingers. He stout-] denied striking him while on the ground. Judge Price in arriving st a ver dict, said it "was a deplorable state of affairs that' "Heighbors could not live in close proximity to one's without having trouble. He said & sto must be put to it, and he would fine the accused for his offence.
