She can see their empty stockings, For she knows they'll be forgot-- Are you going to leave them empty ? hy, of course, I'm sure you're not. Santa Claus' visit promises to be a very happy one in many homes in this city, the commitiee to assist him hav- ing made the work easy for him. The venerable gentleman with his advane- ing years, needs the faithful services of many and this year, in Kingston, he is getting his desire. To All Concerend, Mayor Graham's banquet to the mn, the city officials, and a few friends, in the Iroquois . Hotel, last night, was a brilliant function, and at two o'clock this morning, when the conipsny «adjourned, the feeling was that iL was one of the best held io many years. The evening was one of rare enjoyment.' 'The happy speeches were interspersed by music of a very pleasing character. Mayor Graham had on his right left J; M. Mowat. The services J. M. Theriault, proprietor of the hotel, were of the best, the menu being exceptionally fine, opening with oysters, and followed by salads, hot meats," cold meats, vegetables, dos serts, fruits, cheese, tea, coffee, soft gars. ~Ald, D. A. Gives acted as toast master and several hours were spent in di i public affairs. Without going into details the speeches can be summed up in the undaunted spirit of hopefulness as to Kingston's out look in the future. A new én seems to have dawned and with the disappbarance of politics in almost everything that has to do with eivie matters, the brighter prospect is for a citizenship that will' boost and boom the city and give #t all the advantages that united vigorous work ean do. The aldermen were quite en- thusiastic as to what Kingston may become and their aim is and will be to lay foundations sure and true upon which a bigger Kingston may rise. Optimism: was the dominant note -at"the gathering. J. M. Mowat . hriefly toasted "Domjinion of Canada," and Dr. A. % , M.P.P., in the absence of the\ federal member through illness, made a spléndid reply, lauding Can- ada and its great possibilities. The "City of Kingston" was toast- ed by Ald. A. Shaw, whose pride in hig native city has always been great, and stirring replies were made by. Alds, Elliott and Hoag, both of whom exalted the work of the coun- cil and the efforts of the aldermen to improve and develop the city re- sources, _ Dr. MeCarlhy toasted the Board. of Health, and after the health of the board of health had been well drunk, W. 8S. Gordon and William McCam- mon responded, the former pointing out what the board had put up to the city eouncil to accomplish in the best interests of the health of the citizens, Ald, J. 8. R. McCann § toasted the city officials. The city clork, Thomas Hewitt; and R. J: McClelland, testified to their anxiety to further the affairs of the ' city and' to be devoted and earnest 'in their work on Behalf of the citizens. Ald, R. Hanley, for the fourth time at the banquets of the mayors, toast- od the "Ladies" and Ald. Harrison fitly replied, emphasizing the great benefits womanhood had brought to the church, the home, the state. Ald. Kent remembered the "Press," and brief replies were made by J. G. Elliott and F. Sproule. Ald. Carson, in a happy way, toast- ed his worship the mayor, and after it had been drupk with 'enthusiasm and the joviality of the chief magis- trate fittingly declared in song, Mayor Graham expressed his appreciation of the compliment paid him, was delight ed to have so many present as his guests, and insisted that though a conservative mayor, his chief right hand men were reformers in politics, but- they were all fellow-citizens seek- ing the best interests of the communi ty when they gathered together in the council chamber. He thought good work had been accomplished during the past year, and his hope and wish was that every succeeding year would see additional prosperity coming to the city with that marked progress that is characteristic of the work of the council in years past. _ Excellent bass solos were rendered by John Cousing, Ald. D. Couper and J. Halliday, while L. Marchand clever- ly executed piano solos. The heartiness of the vocal toasts was made possible by the leadership of Ald. Abraham Shaw, who pitched the tunes with real Methodist ardour. No announcements as to candidacy for the coming = election were made; the only intimation of importance was that of Ald. Elliott, who intimated that an inspector of gas, whom he had met during the evening, declared that Kingston's product was the best pro duced in any city in the dominion. The outflow of the same by the alder- nen "of Kingston, last night, was of a magnificently high character and could not be eclipsed by any" other city on the continent. .
