PATHY ~ creasing as a result of local option and license reduction, why are the liquor men fighting these move- ments? Actions speak louder than words. Do the liquor men want to pose now as philanthropists who are anxious to prevent this Increase in the liquor bill? Temperance people are easy, but they are not quite sv easy as that. Who is paying for the advertisements which have brought these statments to your notice? The Hquor people. Incredible! They. would not knock their own business in this way. No, but this is just a subtle way of switching the temper- ance people over to their side to get them 'to support what the whiskey men really want, viz., every bar they | can get. SC yr --S ro t The Demand for License Reduction. "Public sentiment must rule everywhere. Municipalities must be ruled by majorities." These are the words of the liquor advertisement. We shall hold the liguor men to their words. Nearly 800 bona fide voters in the City of Kingston demanded by their signatures that a by-law for the reduction of licenses be submitt- ed to the people. If any of the par< ents who signed it are "ashamed to own their offspring' their shame is \ due to the dastardly; cowardly, in- human work which the whiskey "fanatics" and anlacs" have wrought upon these self-same off- spring. Ministers of all denomina- tions are zealously wor for the bylaw, and are solidly the whole moremant., Many men A1e In the ver tha Beri rity, papers? xo, because they »* -~ Will Drinking Increase ? If drinking were likely to increase every liquor man---supported by the strong financial backing of the Dis- tiller's and Rrewer's Assoclation-- would be working night and day for license reduction. Are these people spending thelr money to prevent the passage of a by-law, the result of which will be to increase the most profitable department of their busi- ness? Not by a long chalk! They have always worked for the increase of their business, and they are trying to defeat this by-law to prevent any diminution of their business that they know would result. Every hotel cut off weakens their aggregate power, and the big liquor associa- tion is fighting, tooth and nail, to re- tain their grip on the people. License reduction has been tried in Kingston before, and 60 licenses have been cut off, and there is not 20 per cent. of the drinking done here to-day that there was when 90 licenses were issued. Reduction has and will de- erease drinking. Accommodation. Sheds for horses are paying in this city now, and more of them will pay a8 they are needed.
