Bell, ex-mayor of King- ston, who left Wednesday afternoon, for his homo in Hamilton, desired the Whig to state that he regrefs ~ very much the defeat of Ald. BR. H. Toye, in Sydenham ward. BIG JANUARY , WEDNESDAY, CLAIMS OF HOTELMEN THAT REDUCTION BY-LAW CAR-| RIED BY ONLY 67. JANU | Another Report is That the Prosem] License Commissioners Will Not Accept He-appointment -- What! Hotely, Will Lose Licenses? i The hotel men claim that the ma-| jority in favor of license reduction on | Monday was only sixty-seven. Ihey | say that the figures for sub-division | No. 3, Ontario ward, were transposed, and should have read: For, 19; against, 38. These were the original | figures given, but the declaration - of | the deputy returning officer gives 33! for and 19 against. A recount would | be necessary to decide the question, as the returning officer's declaration has | been made, giving the majority for | the measure as 105, What hotels will be cut off ? is the question heard on every side. | The license commissioners will have to give a good deal of thought to the question, and depend very largely upon the reports of Inspector Wright. The commissioners' year of service has about expired, and the board may not be re-appointed. Some persons will have to "face the music." The Whig learns from some leading | conservatives that it may be suggest- ed to the provincial secretary that outside inspectors be called in to help arrive at a decition as to, what fif- teen hotels should be allowed to have liquor licenses. The general opinion, as heard upon the streets, is that all places that have not catered to the travelling pub- lie by offering meals taking in lodgers, shoild be wiped out. The view is so freely stated that police court records should carefully studied by the commissioners in com- ing to a decision. From now till the first day of May, when thé licenses are awarded, there will be great wire- pull ing. ar be COMING TO THE GRAND, A Fine Play Sct for Saturday Next-- Love's Youag Dream. The play hag been a sensational SUCCess in every city that it has appeared, and ran for one year in New York, nine months in Boston, six months in Chicago and six months in London, England. "Love's Young Dream." Those who love the rollicking stories of Irish life, such as Charles Leve: night write, will find a special charm in the play, "Love's Young Dream," which kiske O'Hara is presenting this season, and which will he presented here at the Grand on Monday, Janu- ary 8th. This new work is a story of the same period as Charles 0' Malley and Harry Lorrequer, and has that same dare-devil atmosphere in which the pulse of the reader or audito beats faster and with good wholesome blood. It is the period in which gal- lantry held sway; when for love's sake a young blade was willing to face his hunter at the dangerous stone fence; Of such a character is tha hero of "Love's Young Dream."
