Mr. Gibson told what the alliance had done in the way - of securing local option, and oressed home the evils caused by the Fras traffic. "There's no need of your defending lofal option," said Sir James, rather testily. "We are not attacking it." N. W. Rowell, leader of the opposi- tion, said there was no doubt of the evils of the bar room and the quest tion was what legislation should be adopted to counteract it. Leader Rowell promised that the op- position would have a policy on pro that it could best be accomplished by 1 " {hibition before next session. New York, Feb. 14.--The relentless arm of the law, guided by the indiet- ments of the federal! grand jury in- vestigating the McNamara dynamite cases, arrested at least fifty promin- ent labor men in various paris of the Luited States this morning. The ar- rests were almost simultaneous, in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Indianapolis and other cities. It was evident that the federal authorities had arranged to spread the net all over the states at once, and leave no opportunity for escape. Among the first arrests made was that of Frank M. Ryan, president of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Iron Workers, United States and Canada. He was placed under custody at Indianapolis, charg- ed with being involved in the dyna. mite conspiracy. Those arrested in cluded a number of walking delegates, business agents and so on. Some of ficials of the machinists and 'other un- ions, aldo alleged to be implicated, are under arrest. The federal authorities will make no statement regarding the arrests ox- cept that the trials "will show that for six vears a campaign of dynamit- ing and general coercion has been car ried on by union labor officials against open shops. It is believed that Ryan and most of his associates will be tried at Indianapolis. Bonds aggre gating three hundred thousand dollars have been demanded for bail, to ap- pear March 12th. Few so far have been able to secure suitable sureties, and are still in custody, John T. Butler, of Buffalo, first vice-president of the Structural Iron Workers, and Herbert (. Hockin, Detroit, second vice-president and sceretary, were also arrested in lodianapolis this morning. Officials of the Carpenters and Iron Moulders' Unions, of Indianapolis are also under arrest.
