Ontario Government to Aid This Struggling . Seat of Léatning, Whose Degrees are Somewhat Under the Ban. London, Ont., Feb. 7.~Hon. Adam Beck announced, yesterday, that the Ontario government has decided to grant $15,000 a year to the Western University here, though nominally the grant is for the maintenance of the new science institute, He received word to this effect from Justice Mere. dith, chancellor of the university, who is satisfied that this will enable the institution to make ends meet and provide accommodation for four hun- dred students, two hundred id © arts and two hundred in medicine, This amount falls far short of what had been asked for, but according to the chancellor, the department of educa- tion has raised a ban against the uni- versity in regard to recogmition of its degrees. THE COMMONS ON FRIDAY, What Transpired at the Week-end Session. Ottawa, Feb. 17.--Mr. Armstrong's omnibus resolution. covering every- thing from railway freight rates to cable telegraph and telephone tolls, and thence to the postal service, was another hone of contention in. the commons, yesterday. Mr. Lemieux finally consented io hold over his re- solution till the member for Fast present, on the under- standing that it should then be dealt with. The house then- went into public works supply and wandered pretty well all over Canada in the course of half an hour, At the end of that time Mr. Lemieux had something to say about the dismissal of George T. Harbor, public works emplovee in Gaspe, He had acted as deputy. re- turning officer in the recent elections, and lost his place in consequence. "I must warn the minister of pub- ic works that there is a large clan of Scotsmen in Gaspe," said Mr. Lemieux. "The minister will find that if he Touches one Scotsman. all the Scots in Canada will resent it." SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS To be Held in Montreal on the 26th of February. .° 3 Ottawa, Feb. 17.--The Ahnadiap fig- ure skating championships which were to have beer held in the arena next Monday jvening, have been postponed unt' Monday evening, Feb. 26th. The Visit of a large and representative body of skaters from New York and Bostcm and the promise of additional entries from Montreal, Kingston and 'Toronto, were taken into consideration and at a rush noon executive meeting of the Minto club the alteration was made. The Montreal teand® was hand- icapped by the indisposition of one of its members and the Ottawa club pre- ferred to have a fight for the honors rather than win by default, The Earl Grey club, «f Montreal, therefore, are arranging for a big excursion to come by special train and will enter a couple of additional pairs and some additional individual competitors. Wheti to this was added the solicita- tion of competitors from Toronto and Kingstons the prospects of a so much larger mpet decided the executive at once. Wildcat Saskatoon Scheme. The Saskatoon Capital of February '12th contains an interview with Syd- ney W. Johns, manager of the Saska- toon Cominission company, who has returned after an extended trip through Eastern Canada. Mr. Johns says that he came across some wild- eat propositions with regard to the sale of Saskatoon property. This is what he say= about one scheme : "In Kingston, Onut., property was being sold from a map that showed it to be two miles from the centre of the city. The post office was taken as centre, but it was the Nutana post office that was shown--one mile from the actual post office of the city of Saskatoon." ¥ Left for Watertown. James Kane, president, with M. Mo- ran and M. Gratton, of the Iroquois Club of this city, left to-day, via Cape Vincent for Waterdown, N.Y., where they will be guests of the Iroquois Club, of Watertown, at their fifth annual banquet, on Monday night.
