J. 6. EVANS ASKS THAT HIS PELLOW.CITIZENS DEFER JUDGMENT Concerning His Case Till the Evid. ence Is Heard--He Asserts His Innocence of the Charge. Dr. J. G. Evans, who has been for nine weeks in prison in Toron- to, awaiting trial in connection with the Revell case, is out on bail of $2,000, and arrived in Kingston on Sunday morning. When iuterview- ed. on Monday, Dr. Evans made the following statement. "I- dm not inclined my case at this stage of the 'pro ceedings, but in view of the Kindo and considerate manner in which you have treated the matter 0 your news columns, [ could no think of refusing at least an ex pression of my personal apprecia tion, Since the unfortunate matter which is so well known by this time, developed, Kingston paper have published everything with ¢ due regard to the fact that my home #nd family were here, with out dooriving readers of such in formation as were interesting them from the purely news stand point, and the instincts of the press are sufficiently strong in me not to object to this. "1 arrived home yesterday morn ing and | was glad to be again ii the city where 1 have lived for the last fourteen years, My welcome home compensated me some fo what 1 have suffered in the pas nine weeks and the hearty hand shake and, congratulations 1 have received from some of the best bus iness men and citizens of Kingstol are as.a balm to a heart sore fron suffering. Many friends have call ed at my home and extended sym if 1 needec to discus it. "1 ws admitted to bail day morning, one of the best mer in Toronto becoming my surety There was no concrete reason why bail should not have been grante long ago, and if the most guilt) person against which the wors erime has been charged, can be hel isolated from everybody for nin weeks withont trial or the privilegs of bail, then it is time we had new Magna Charta. "In my own. conscience I neve had any doubt as te what would bs the finding of the coroner's jury i my case. The analyst submittec his exhibit to the most searching analysis for the volatile as well a the more permanent poisons and his report was of the most sweelh ing and convincing character thax there was positively no evidence or trace of foul or unfair play. Thi was supplemented by the report o Dt. Bilvefthorn and Dr. Archibal who performed the post-mortem and these two capable surgeons de clared death to be due to 'natura causes,' This lifted a load frow my heart, and a shadow from m) life. 1 can assure you, and .m) friends here are glad of the result "Since my arrest, I have stead fastly rofused to talk or even give evidence before the coroner's jury and 1 took this position because ) felt it my duty to reserve my ammu nition far the proper time and place. Thia is the first word I have spoken for use or publication sines 1 have insisted on trial by . judge and jury so that it will not be set tled in police court. I would like all to know that since the ingues' terminatod in our favour, the crown has been very kind and really con siderate. This | appreciate even though it comes late in the case. "A few of the so-called big dail ies in Toronto have been a Mitte 'vellow' in my case, whilst others have been generous and have shown the spirit of the genuine purveyor of news. I knew my own city would show up well and never wor ried. 1 only ask that my friends and fellow-citizens wait until they know the real facts before they form an opinfon in this matter, and that even those who may not fee! inclined to be generous will remem: ber that I am a Kingstonian, whe has always been loval to the old limestone city and its best inter- ests, and that 1 am entitled to be considered innocent until proven guilty by a jury of my peers. 1 feel it all very keenly and profoundly and the blow comes hard in life to one of my years. When I am ready to on Fri discuss the whole case, my owh city | papers will get the first word from my mouth, I assure you. Until then, please bear with me and re- member that heart and brain are too sore just now, to undertake a task even if it was an advisable one." Had a Narrow Escape. Three Queen's students who had been attending the university last fall al most met death last week by being thrown into the lake at Belmont, near Trenton. These students had been up near Trenton on a survey, and were 8 paddling along in a cance. All at once they came to sort. of a rapid, and in Jess time that it takes to tell the tale, the three were thrown into the water. Two of them could swim, dnd they got hold of thélr companion and brought him safely to shore. A Fine Mathematician. YOUNG MAN FOR KILLING SQUIRREL CITY PARK. IN Youth Admitted Throwing at Squir. rel 'and Causing its Death----Magis- trate Will Deal Severely With Future Offenders. A young man, who fired a stone, in city park, and caused the death of a squirrel, was given a severe reprimand, by Magistrate Farrell, in police court, Monday morning, and also fined $1 and costs. The complaint was lodged by W. H. Phillips, superintendent of parks. The young man' told the magis- trate that he only fired a piece of mud, but he admitted that the poor squirrel had died. Mr. Phillips+pointed out to magistrate, that he did not wish sovere punishment meteds out in this case, but he did want boys and young men. to understand that the practice of throwing at the squir- rels must be stopped. "We want to keep the squirrels there," he aded. Men who should know better, had been guilty of the offence. Mr. the Phillips also stated that there were a great many complaints about hoys using catapults in the park. Magistrate Farrell said that it was toe bad, that there should be trouble of this kind in our natural parks. People should know enough to leave the squirrels alone, He pointed out that, in Boston, wild ducks were allowed. on the river, ime the heart of the city. And they were not interfered with, as people knew that if they did touch them, they would come in for the con- demnationr of the citizens in gen- eral.
