Turnbull, late rector of St. George's Anglican church, Goderich, has been in Mexico for a couple of years, but finding the climate did not agree with his health, gave up his position and started back to Canada during the recent revolutionary disorders. With kim he carried 4 number of important papers entrusted in his keeping by offitals of the United Hilates government, as well as a num- ber of sermons, Mexican bandits boarded the train before the boundary wad reached, and searched afl the passengers, Coming to Rev. Mr. Turnbull they found the papers. They promptly removed him to. the baggage car and bound him with ropes, firmly convinced that he was a spy.. He told them he was a wlnister of the gospel, formerly of Goderich, Ont., but they 1 not be lieve him. The leader of the bandits the Wergyman shot, and t Sanbers of the party had their aimed when the intended vietim eh of a plan. "Before you shoot," he said, "I want you to give me a. chance," speaking in Spanish, with which lan guage Le is wel acquainted. "To prove to you that 1 am not a spy, and that 1 am what | say | am, pick out any sermon in that bunch, give me the text, and 1 will preach the sermon to you." So they brought out his and gave him a text, and he ahead and preached four or five pages of the sermon to them in Spanish. The leader saw that he was what he ropresented himself to be, and releas ed him. When Mr. Turnbull got out of Mex- can territory! he wrote to Jud | Hett, for years a warden of St. Georges church at Goderich, saying humorously : "The sermons that kept you people from coming to church saved my life." Mr. Twnbull may be taken back to Mexico by the United States govern- ment to assist in certain internation- al proceedings, according to J. Fast Jordan, of this city, and formerly of Coderich, who tells the story. Mr. Turnbull's son, Paul Turabull, who married Miss Beatrice Krmatin- ger, of St. Thomas, is a resident of Mexico City.
