The back divis- fon of the first team will remain jn tact, as last year's championship line-up: --Gait, full back, and Cars ruthers, McAulay and Lawson, half backs. : Some of the recruits, who look good for places on the first team, mainly in the scrimmage, are Strat- ford, Leask, old Upper Canada Col- lege boys; McKee, from, St. -An drew's school, Toronto, and Dobbie who formerly figured on the High. field school team, of Hamilton, Greén, who bucked well in the scrimmage, last year, will likely be made effective on the middle left wipg. A wr ------ WOLFE ISLAND FAIR 'WAS HELD ON TUESDAY WEDNESDAY, AND W-------- Two Horse Races on Tuesday After. " moon ~~ Wolfe Island Defeated Glenvale at Baseball by 10 Runs to 2. ~ The Wolle Island iKir opened on' I'uesday, and in spite of the fact that rain threatened in the afternoon, about four hundred people were on the grounds. Besides the attractive and teresting displays of 'stock. and farm and garden produce, the committer provided two Morse races, 4 groen race and a 2.50 class; and a baseball game hetween Wolle lslawd and Glenvale. Taking thé exhibits as a whole, it might be said that the stock exhibits are superior and the farm produce in- ferior to previous years. The fair se~ cretary states that in the stoek there never were as many entries' booked as there are this year. On the othe: hand, the showing of grain is very small. The vegetables, although very good, are not nearly as numerous as other years. The homemade stufi and preserves oceupy only about one-qua; ter the space filed last year. On Tuesday afternoon there were two entries of sheep and seven of pigs, The horses, though not all there, were a larger and: better display than ever, Some of the leading exhibitors of horses. were FE. Bricoland, W. and R Mosier, F. sr Staley and James Mc Glyon. "The poultry was much the same a8 in previous years, and some fine fowl were shown. In the hall, a display of flowers held the large rack in centre and were very atirgetive. The space around the wall was consigned to needle work, which was very good, but here, too, the exhibits fell below those of last year. The lower end of the hall was given to the fruits and vegetables. Among the latter the best examples shown were the cabbage, of which there was a large entry, and the specimens were splendid, The showing jot fruit" was good, but rather limited. The"vaeancy in the grain showing i accounted for hy the rainy weather during the harvesting season. The drought in the early summer and the recent drenching rains spoiled the grain erop on 'the island, as well as throughout the county. Indeed, this may aecount for the light exhibits in many other lines. G. NH. Taggart, BAL. of Syden- ham, was gn the scene with his show- ing from the Ontario department of agriculture, the object of which is to impress apon ihe farmer the advan tages of intelligent methods of farm- ing, the advantage of spraying fruit trees and draining grain land Th use of fertilizers A) the knowledg: of the weed seeds which he endeavor: to make general, are one of the bes things the government has dome #6 the farmer. The difficulty is that the people do not seem to understand that there is valuable education for thew free, and thyy arc~onstantly inquiring whigd the goverfiment instructor is sell ing and if he is agent for degin pipes or fertilizer or spraying chemicals. horse races were interesting Both green race and 2.50 clask wer: | decided in. three heits.
