THE DAILY RAID BY THE POLICE": ON HONG LEMS LAUNDRY OX! y SUNDAY NIGHT. Complained He in Gambling---- Not Proven in Toronto Celestial Had Lost Money The Charge Was Police Court. As the result of a raid by the po- lice on the Chinese laundry, con ducted by Hong Lee, at the corner of Princess and Division streets, befors ten o'clock on Sunday evening, twelve Chinamen faced the magis- treate in court on Monday morning. After an Hour and a hall's examina- tion of witnesses, Magistrate Farrell digmissed the charge gambling ffs the Celestials, The magis- trfte sald that from the evidence, much of which did not ring true, a conviction was unjustifiable, The ar rest may deter any attempt at gam- bling for some time among the Ce- lestial population of the city. The raid was pulled off by Sergt Robert Nesbitt and six or seven po- licamen, on information received at th: police station through Charlie Sam, a young, fairly well dressed Chinaman, speaking good English, who had arrived in the city on Sat- strapped,' financially. W K.C., appeared for th: and as the news of the the of afternoon, F. Nickle, Celesgtials, rajd had spread through the city, court room was filled. Charlie Sam is doubtless regarded as a "squealer'" by his fellow coun trymen. He was the first of the Chinese examined. He told of arriv- ing In the city from Toronto on Sat- urday afternoon, and of visiting one of the laundrymen on Princess street. He was asked, he said, if le wanted to make some money, and apparently with this end in view vis ited the house of Hong Lee Hi dechared there was gambling going on there, and that he suffered to the axtent of $75 and $50 on Saturday and Sunday nights respectively "What was the game?" asked thoi magistrate, "Dominoes and stud poker re plied the witness. He said all wer playing as well as he: Dominoes, a couple cards, and black and white beads which the Chinaman declared were utilized as counters, with a tin box containing sixty cents in five and ten cent pieces, were exhibited on blanket in court. Upon the arrival of the dozen Celestials at tho, police court dice were found in one Tag' pocket, The magistrate asked Charlie Sam what the stakes were. "The white counter was $1 and the lack $5, replied the witness. The court inti mated that the stakes were fairly high. Witness said that he paid Hong Lee, the proprietor for the counters and when the game Wes finished Hong got his "take off." He said 'that about 9.30 he had left the house of play and informed the police. Mr. Nickle cross-examined all the witnesses, sometimes with the aid of} an interpreter. The counsel surprised Charlie Sam by asking him. to produce the pawi ticket he had exchanged hiz wateh for on November 7th in Hawm- ilton it developed that the ticket had been issued to a Yep Gee, and not Charlie Sam. Charlie Wah tes tified that the stranger's name was not Charlie Sam, but as the ticket sald.
