The Frontenac county council open- 'ed ite November session on Tuesday afternoon. In attendance were War- den Godkin snd Councillors Salmond, Kennedy, Foley, Hamilton, Gordon, Hawkey, Miller, Stoness, Cronk, Thomson, Franklin, Ruttan, Fisher, Donaldson and Taylor. Letters were read from T. H. Heary, of Morrisburg, F. E. J. Corkill, Iro- quis, M. R. Reid, Sharbot Lake, and 8S. A. Truscott, Iroquois, apply- ing for the position of public school j inspect or of South Frontenac. It was decided to hear the applicants on Wed, | nesday afternoon. ; At' the Wednesday moming session » 'ouncillors Calvin and Grimshaw were present, in addition to the above named members. The ° resignation of Dr. William Spankie, as public school inspector for South Frontenac, was read. He expressed to the council his thanks for many kindnesses to him during this long term of office. McIntyre & Mclntyre wrote asking council, on behalf of Leslie Flaming, of Ottawa, for fiity dollars damages. While driving a motor car over the Joyceville Road, eight and a half miles from the city, Mr. Fleming suf- fered an accident and alleges that the road was in a dangerous condition. The deputy minister of education reported that the department approv- ol the continuation in office of M. R. Reid, M.A., inspector of North Fron- tenac. The Loughboro council asked that the Desert Lake bridge be made a charge upon the county. W. FP. Nickle, county solicitor, re ported that thers was no legal lia bility on the part of Frontenac coun- cil to make good fees to the amount of 8300 for attendance of pupils of this county at the Gananoque high school. It need pay only from a sense of duty. Councillor Foley wanted a state ment from Dr. Spankie as to the res sons for his Xosiguation, The doctos had been a faithful and a competent official of the county and if the coun cil could do anything to retain him, it should do so. Lounallor Foley was not satisfied with the action of _ the educational department in not approv ing Dr. Spankie's continuance in office Dr. Spankie replied that he did not think there was anything he could add to what he had written. He bad ser ved the county twenty-six years a half, and not one complaint had been entered against him. That was something that would linger long ar a pleasant memory. 'Lhe doctor refer red to the law on the matter of in spectorships., He that the chief objection the department at Tor onto had against him was alleged de filency in hearing. Last week he had received an invitation te withdraw his resignation and undergo another hear ing test. When he underwent examin ation by Dr. Merchant, the provincial inspector unwell, and was treating himself for a cold. inspector Spankie laughingly said that it was pretty evident that he was neither old nor feeble. If the council decided to elect someone in his place,- he would be glad to give his successor every help and initiate him into the office. 'The best of feeling would prevail, even if he had to re tire. Of course, it was hard after so many vears to have to give up a posi- tion that he had filled to the satis faction of the peopic of Frontenac. I'he question of accepting the - doo tor's resignation was deferred till » later session. Prof. Alexander Laird reported on the work of the Children's Aid Socie ty, towards which the county coun cil makes a grant of $150 a year. Last families onachie; the agent.
