Stephen from | other societies and individuals. Among them were J. McD. Mowat, past president, Vancouver, B.C.. so- | cietiea at Albany, N.Y., Hamilton, | Cornwall, St. Catharines, Montreal { and Quebec | Prof. William Morgan, the newly { elected chaplain of the soclety, re- | sponded to the toast, '"The Land ©' { Cakes." He made interesting reference to the land across the sea, and the characteristics of its people home and abroad, spicing his speech with stories. The speaker re- minded his hearers that though en- dowed with the canniness of his race the Scotsfian possesed other obvious characteristics, and he believed the most prominent of these were in- dependence, genérosity and boldness. The Scottish race, had not detes:- orated under native skies, and her Sons and daughters who had roam- ed abroad. had become nation builders wherever they had cast their lot. "The Day And All Who Homor It" brought an able response from Prof. Marison, who made an 'apt compari- son, in some respects, between ' the Scotch and the Irish races. The Irish, no matter in what part of the' world they live, had continued to fight for their native land and peo- ple But their enthusiasm has been practical. The speaker feared that Scotsmen had in the past "iallen down," as it were to sowe extent. Théir enthusiasm was not, on ithe whole, brought to a practical issue. He declared that the Scotch? land { question should be seriously taken | hold of by her sons. The Irishman, | the professor said, bad proved him- golf a better practical politican than i the Scotsman. J. A. Macdonald, i = The speaker § statemint which Dr. editor of the Toronto Globe, had re j cently made in the cily to the effect that Scotland had been depleted and | weake ened by the loss of men she sent {to war in the past. He declared that { his native country had been strength ened by it and glorified in the men she had contributed to the past. Citing leaders in Canadian history Seotsmen, such as Lord Elgin and Sir John Macdonald, the professor { pointed out that Canadian history is deeply rooted in Seotland. In conm- | elusion, referring to literature, he | urged that St. Andrew's society eom- { mene + a subseription to endow a chair {in Scottish history and literature in lone of our universities. "The Land of the Maple' was suit- ably responded to by the singing of the song, and Rev. W: Mcintosh re- sponded He drew de to three particular points in 8 good respouse.
