The origin of the as- sociation traces back to the time of the Crusaders, but was founded in 1877 by the Order of the Hospi Sf. John of Jerusalem in England, aod the charter granted in 188% en- tertaing a full recognition of the St. John Ambulance. Association as the ambulance department of the order. The different phases of the = work were pointed out: The railroad, which the C.P.R. has especially fur thered; fires and accidents. St. John Ambulance Association has recently decided to take chaxge of public re lief in case of any disaster, and the work has been developed into the banding of its graduates into bri gades, of which Sir Henry Pellatt is commissioner. A resolution endorsing the asso cintion's work and favoring the for- mation of a local branch was moved by 'E. E. Horsey, and speeches were made by Lieaut,-Col. H. R. Duff, Dr A. E. Ross, M.P.P., and others. Class- ot will soon be organized, with com- phtent instructors in the different lines. = Tt is desirous that all classes of citizens shall take advantage of the opportunity to become adapt in these necessary lines. - A. W. Wheat- ley, gemeral manager of the Cana dian Locomotive company, who was elected president of the local centre, has shown hin sympathy in the work by offering a cup for competition of factory teams. IN MARINE CIRCLES. in the Movements of Vessels Along the Harbor. The steamer Bickerdike, arrived at Richardson's elvator, with 'a car go of grain, from Fort William. The steamer Keyport arrived from Montreal, and will be laid up for the winter. The steamer Sowards is in port, from Bath, after discharging coal there and will clear during the day for Oswego. The steamer Eastwood arrived from Montreal. The vessel is go- ing into winter quarters here. The steamer Rhodes passed on her way from Montreal to Fair- haven, to load coal for Toronto. Capt. Alexander Potter of the steamer Robert Anglin, has réturn- od home, from Ottawa, Capt. Pot- ter was for some time connected with the Folger line of boats. Capt. Charles Lawrence, Brock street, first mate on the large steambarge, Western Star, is home for the winter. Capt. Joseph Leduc. of the barge Lapwing; has laid up the barge here for the winter. Capt. Leduc is a brother of the late Capt. Leduc, who with eleven others, lost his life when the steamer Cecelia went down, on Lake St. Louis, last month. Capt. Joseph Leduc lives at Valleyfleld, and left for that place, to-day. The lake barge, Burma. of the Calvin company, was docked at the shipbuilding - company's dock. on Thursday afternoon. The steamer Simla, of the Calvin company, was due up from Montreal on Friday, to go into winter quar: ters: BRILLIANT LECTURE Will be Given in Grant Hall on Tuesday. Miss Forbes-Robertson, who appears jn Grant Hall on Tuesday evening, Pec. 10th, under the auspices of the Alumnae Assoeiation of Cueen's Uni- versity, in aid of the Women's Resi dence fund, is a niece of the dis tinguished actor of the same name, ad is herself an actor of interna tional reputation. Appearing first with Sir Henry Irving, she has since acted with Sir Herbert Tree, Sir Charles Wyndham and Sir John Hare besides playing Opbelia and Des- demona with Forbes-Robertson. , She first came to America in 1907 with Kllem Terry. Last season she was heard in brilliant lectures on the drama, illustrated by readings from the plays discussed, and was invited twice and three times to the same ety. Migg Forbes-Robertson has a very musical and well-trained voice.
