Before he was thirty he had Leen convicted and sentenced to prison for three felonies, and in 1907 he was caught in Bufialo, after having forged checks and committed burglaries from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific. Ife was sentenced to a long term in Dan- nemora. After his conviction he began the study of medicine and surgery, and in de- | 1909 he told the prison physician that he believed he was suffering from a pressure of the skull upon his brain, which made him criminally inclined. At his request an operation to remove a depression taused by sn accident when he was fourteen Years old was performed by Dr. De Witt GG. Wilcox, of Boston.
