The Angle-American hotel, at the Cor. of Ontario and Jolinson streets conducted by Michael Lawless was damaged to the extent of about $2,- 000, in a blaze which broke out at 7.15 o'clock, on Thursday night. It was a difficult blage for the depart- ment to handle, owing to the fact that théy were handicapped by wires in front of the hotel. in raising ladders. The fire started tn a bedroom on the third story, from some unknown cause. This bedroom and its com- tents were gutted. The bedroom un- als badly scorched and the upper hallway suffered considerably. The éntire upgier flit was damaged by smoke h the building and the contents are insured. ¢ dining room 'was damiaged by water, but not to any great ex- tent. It was in fit. condition to be used on Friday, morning. The firemen used two lines of hose, the inside, and. there was a. goed pressure of water. The only trouble experienced by .the firemen Was In getting ladders #o the bedroom win- dow. In fires of this kind, the wires are always a source of great trouble. When the firemen arrived the flames were reaching out the fromt windows, and it looked very 'serious for a time, but when the firemen got to-work, it was soon under control. The house was well filled with gyests at the time, but there was no ex- citement. Had the fire occurred late in the night the result, no doubt, would have been far more serious. and would probably have resulted in loss of life, At 9.45 o'elock Thursday night, the firemen were called to a double dwelling, Nos. 20 and 73 Cleray street west, owned by HH. Wilson, where a chimney gave some trouble. There was no damage. The new firemen are getting 'a good workout. $s since their: cartalnly ap- THE LAKE DISASTER FUND Has Reached $110,000 10,000 -- Subscript ion From Portsmouth The Lakes Disaster Fund has now reached a total of $110,000, of which over $100,000 is now with the To- ronto General Trusts Corporation, and bearing interest.
