St. nev, hriek BRIS FOND Ati) SI was TAKEN TWO WEEKS OFp A STEAMER Disposed of at Local Shop and the Police are Now Making Further In- vestigation Wholesale Thefts of Brass. During 'Winter. Constable James Craig un- a auantity of stolen brass valued at $50, while one his rounds on Wednesday, and it is pow at the po- fice station. A portion of Police the .. brass has been John Duncan, which is in port to the police two weeks ago, and ever since an effort has been made to lo- cate it. It appears that 'the brass 'was disposed of at a local shop. Con- stable Craig noticed the brass in the shop, and, believing that. it might be some of the brass reported missing off | the vessel, he» made a thorough inves- tigatioo, with the result that it was found that some of it had heen taken from the vessel in question. The cap- lice station, on Thursday morning and identified it. The stealing of the brass put the captain of the boat to a great deal of inconvenience, owing to the fact that the vessel was being fitted out for the summer. As a result, some new plates had to be ordered, and they are now being made, all of which means extra expense in addition to the inconveni- ence. It would appear as if there has been quite an organized gang at work in the city this last winter, stealing brass, as it will be remember that just a short time ago Constable Bate- son discovered two tons of it and all was identified as having been stolen. One man is now serving time in Cen- tral prison, having been found guilty of stealing brass. * Considerable Later. The chances are that the first boat' from Kingston to réach Cape.Vin- cent, N. French St. Paul's Cathedral, London It is a fact that St. Paul's cathed- ral, London, England, was originally a heathen temple? -- Serap Book Friend. It is. Banister Fletcher, in a lecture in London the other day, gave the history of the cathedral, or rather the cathedrals, for there have been three cathedrals on the present site. Before even a Christian church was built there a Roman temple to the goddess Diana was erected. Grad- ually the temple fell into decay, and was replaced by a Christian church in the year 597. To that church a monastery was attached, and for five centuries it remained. At the end of that time, however, a fire demol- ished the church, and it was replaced by a Cathedral in 1087 by Morris, Bishop ot London. This must have been one of the finest cathed- rals in England. It had a lofty dome 260 feet high, and its spire rose to a height of 460 feet above the ground. The chapel house stood in the cloisters and it is still possible to see the foundations of those cloisters. The noble cathedral remained until the great fire of Lon don. About 1500 the nave of St. Paul's was the resort of all the wits of the town. A market was held there; it was used as a sfable, and the erypt was excellent workshops and wine cellars. This came abou! through the cathedral being struck F by lightning in 1444, and again in 1561, the steeple being destroyed on the second oceasion, and it was never rebuilt, Queen Elizabeth gave 1000 gold marks towards a subscription list that was opened to rep: !: **. and (the mayor of Lomdon and citizens raised a sum which represented ,abaut £80,000 of our money.
