Sc., of Fort William, who has been sorely bereaved through the death of his 'wife. Mr. Manbard was married a year ago at Cobourg, and moved west... A few weeks ago Mrs, Man- hard was attacked with illness which later rendered it necessary for a very, serious operation to be performed. During last week the doctors pro- posed a transfusion of blood, and Mr. Manhard submitted to the or- deal; twice his arms were tapped and blood transfused to his wife, with some hope of "improvement, but on Friday last she died; and very regret table to say Mr. Manhard was lying unconscious from the loss of blood, in which state he continued for many hours. "I have been out carting as early as 4.30 in the morning," one carter told 'the Whig, on Wednesday night, "and I know others who have been doing the same." Ashes to be carted out of yards and cellars provide a great deal of work and then there is a great deal of other refyyge which has to be cart od away. A citizen stated that he knew of a party who had ashes piled in his cellar for five years. They ware re- moved just a few days ago as are sult of the cleaning up campaign. The citizen has an extra large cellar, so he was not put to any inconven- ience to leave the ashes in his cel lar. The city «dumps have been added to + materially' during the past two weeks. In discussing the matter yesterday afternoon it was found undesirable to hold a meeting on Jume 3rd owing to so many coun- ter' attractions, and with the possi- bility of an election campaign going on, and a proposal was made that the meeting do not occur until evening of Thanksgiving Day. As a result some of the latter were laid off on "Thursday morning and their places filled by foreigners. The cause of 'this seemed to bé that the men were working a little too ~lose to a barroom on Wednesday after- noon and they 'took it into their heads to quench their thirst. As a consequence, they became unfitted for their work, the foreman said. The latter decided to lay the guilty parties off for a while.
