For forty "welts he was a guard in ' the penitentiary, and also was a member of the Portsmouth coun- eil for several yeaps. The deceased was a Roman Catholic and attended the Church of the Good Thief, from which the funeral was held on Thurs- day morni at nine o'clock. The late Mr. ewson was a member of the CM.B.A. and in politics was a de- vout conservative. He was held in the highest regard by +a wide circle of friends, who largely atténded the fun- Thursday. M. Friday. ~N The cadet carps of the public, s v arate and high sehools of the cif will be inspected at the tricket field on Friday afternoon at 3.30 o'clock by Col. T. D. R. Hemming, officer commanding the 3rd divisional area, and Major George Gillespie,inspector of cadet corps of the division. The inspection will be over by five o'clock. The band of the R. C. H. AT THE POLICE COURT Six "Holiday Drunks in the Line-up on Thursday In addition to looking after holi- day crowds on Wednesday, the police also had holiday drunks to contend with. Six were in the lineup on Thursday morning, and they all look- ed as ii they had been out for a time all right. Two were fined and the other four were given a pass. A young man charged with theit was allowed to go on suspended sen- tence, a8 it was his first appearance before the court. -------------- Spectators Were In Danger It is only a miracle that some of the people who witnessed the motor- cycle pace on Wednesday afternoon at the fair grounds were not killed as a resplt of the manner im which they kept pushing out om the track. One of the men who drove a ma- chine stated after the race that all he. could motice was a narrow path hardly emough for him to make passage. Had he lost control of the machine some person would surely have beén killed. At times the men were travelling fifty miles an hour.
