The Board of Works, this afternoon, i and dome to a decision with ving Princess street, from Clergy to" Alfred. Ald. Litton, the chairman of the board, ex, pected to have definite word this ai- ternoon from the street railway com. pany as to whether it would bear the expense of putting down heavier rails between Clergy and Barrie treets, a distance of 300 feet. The cost to the company would only be about $560. If she company does this, Ald. Litton said he would be favorable to pave ol w as far as Barrie street, and leave the rest of the roadway until next year, macadamizing and rolling it in the meantime, pavement on the lower t of Prin- oens street would be w on the block above Clergy. Ald. Litton will ask the Board of Works to pass upon the paving of a number of residential streets, particu- larly University avenue, from Princess to Stuart streets. 5 Ald. Litton thinks that this year is a particularly good one to get road work done, as lots of laboring men can be speured owing to building op- erations" being rather light. There will not be half as much building in Kingston this year as last, and road- work would give employment io many men. . S---- Direct From the Factory. Labor men throughout Canada will be interested in "the staterhent made by Br. J. W. Edwards in the com- mons, when he condemned the eight- hour day. Dr. 'Edwards' statement was made in the course of a discus sion of the unemployment which has brought hardship to so many Cana- dian workingmen and their families in the last couple of years. Ibe conservative member fisst de- clared his opinien in regard to legis lation shortening the hours of labor. "Petitions, largely signed," he said, 'are pr ted to Palipment rging upon members to put thr 1sla- rd favoring the Ry f hours of labor beyond what is a+ ibility on the farm. . . I do not think it 1s wise legislation." He passed to a statement as to the eight-hour day. "ld think the eight-hour day. is too short a day in the city," he declared, "and that we have made mistakes in past in listening to the demands f unions and others for ap eight-hour ay. There are certain occupations where an eight-hour day is quite long enough, perhaps too long . . . but say most émphatically that an eight-hour day "for a carpenter or 8 mason is entirely too short." Earlier in the session, a bill to shorten the hours of labor on public works was introduced by Alphonse Verville, M.P., the former president of the Dominion "Trades and Labor Con- gress. By some tactical moves the government '"'shelved" the bill so that r. Verville was unable to bring it he- fare the house for consideration.
