When representatives of the Roch- ester Chamber of Commerce were in Kingston last Tuesday, they were delighted at having a view of Cana- da's royal governor, the Duke ot Connaught. They were shown aout the city by R. Meek, president of the Board, of Trade and E. E. Horsey, and happened t. trail in the procession of automobil- es that accompanied the royal visi- tors to Rockwgod, When they got home, they concocted a sty'v tha. would put the Aunagias of Bible story to shame, and also take &way the lustre from some of Kingston's Ananiases that have stood out pro- minently for years. Here is what the Union and Advertiser says of the Kingston visit: "Mr. Davis called on R. Meek, president ofthe Kingston Board of Trade. Now it so happened that when the Duke of Connaught was on a visit to Canada a good many years ago, Mr. Meek was commis- sioned to be one of an escort from Kingston to Quebee. So it chanced that he enjoyed the acquaintance of the governor-general and it was at his request that Mr. Davis, as the representative of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce, attended the reception and was presented to the duke. The latter was very cordial and talked pleasantly with Mr. Dav- is and his host: In the procession that followed, Mr, Davis was assig- Ded to the fourth automobile in ne'? when Bethel and PET CAT POISONED, And Firemen at Brock Street Station Are in Mourning. The firemen at the Brock street station 'are in mourning because their pet cat, "Pat," is dead, and was the victim of poisoning. "Pat" climbed ladders, could slide dowry the big brass pele and do nearly all the stunts engaged in by the firefighters. He attended all fires, travelling on the hose wagon, and was a general favorite. Sunday he was found dead, and a post-mortem examina- tion showed that he liad been poison- od. His companion fireman cat, "Mike" is feeling very sad, and is go- ing around with a piece of black rib- bon around his neck. Toye, a member of the Utilities Commis. sion, was the means of having an inspector appointed to discover leaks in the waterworks system in the downtown area. Commissioner Tope knew that the leakage, through carelessness of consumers, who took no trouble to have their leaky taps fixed, was a large bill of expense to the city. The inspector appoin' ed has discovered scores and scores of leaks, and is having them remedied. A report on the matter will be Sub- mitted to the commission its 'meeting this afternoon. This was the encouraging report that Ald. J. W. Litton, chairman of the Board of Works, had to make to a Whig representative on Monday noon wher asked about the matter. The chairman on Monday morning received a letter from the street rail- way company, and while the contents of the letter could not be given to the press, the chaifman intimated , that things looked favorable. The ! Board of Works will meet this even- ing at 7.30 o'clock to take up the latest proposition coming from the 'company and will present its report to the City Council to-night. At the meeting of the Board of i Works held last Friday it was be- lieved that the last word had been said in regard to the matter by the street railway, and it was decided to make application to the Ontario Rail- way board to force the street railway to lay a heavier type of rail on the block mentioned.
