"Ontario has had outbreaks in the past," said C. W. Nash, the Guelph entomologist and naturalist, when asked if the latest army worm in vasion of Ontario had been unprece- dented. "All of them have been lo- cated, but some have been very seri- ous. Rotation of crops is really tha most effective, safeguard, as army worm is hatched in the grassy lands. "The moth deposits its eggs in the autumn, and the worm Ys hatched in the spring. Before the worm Is fully developed: the food supply °s exhausted, and pest must seek pas- tures new. Then comes the xmarch in which millions join. * - "When the worms migrate in vast numbers few cereal plants escape. In fact about the- only thing that enjoys immunity is the potato or the pumpkin, although I am not abse- lutely certain even of these two ex- ceptions. When fully developed the worm enters the pupa stage and the season's damage is done. In less than a month the moth emerges and deposits its aggs for the next year's campaiga. "The worm, when fully developed is 1 1-2 inches long. It's a striped caterpillar, marked with black, yel- low, and green. The moth is a dull brown, but can be recognized quite easily by a distinguishing white spot on each forewing; hence the specific' name, unipuncta. One reason for the frequent re- currence of the pest is that farmers are a'lhwing too mueh of the iand to lie in grass for a leng period. 'No, the worm is not peculiar to the United States. It is American in the larger sence and; therefore, is just as much Canadian as American. "As to the remedies, the army worm can be kept in check without much diffieulty if discovered in its early stages in its grassy haunts. may be affected some- a Arsenites, but the appli- cations are not so readily made "When the worms are on the march they may be checked by plowing a trench around the infested district, turning the furrow toward the worms At the bottom of this trench holes should be dug six or eight inches deep and at intervals of ten or fifteen feet. Ihe sides of both french and holes must be kept perpendicular, so that the worms can't climb out. In their ellorts to escape from the trench, the jcuterpillars will fall into these holes and may readily be destroyed if straw or some other inflammable material is thrown upon them and ignited. "I'he worm's best or worst enemy i found in the birds. For nearly twosweeks this fight has been raging. For some reason the natural enemies this year have weak- ened and failed. ~ For it is a fact that the army worm is presentmore of less numerously every year. Held in check by their enemies, they us ually do not mobilize in armies, but stay in certain fields. Then they be come numerous enough to 'feel in touch," however, they start "march ing," and travel across the dauntry in ever-increasing numbers, eating up the crops in their path "The army worm is to be seen the province every summer,' M#.
