The Length Of the Marches Gradual 1y Incrensed -- The Rifle Shooting 'Of the Men Is Becoming Excellent. No 'date has yet been set for the long route march of the 21st over- seas battalion mentioned in yester- day's Whig. A few days ago the left half battalion took a seven mile hike! through 'the country" The next will ed probably be to Kingston Mills. This is, about thirteen niles. The next will probably be twenty miles and Alreturn to camp the same-day, the lunch being served -to the men at noon. This method will be followed until long tramps.are not tiring to Then probably. in a month's time the jaunt will be away through the country, staying three or four days on the route. The bai- talion will bivoua¢ at suitable place es at night and travel about thirty miles a day. Thirty miles is not a hard day's travel. An A. 8. C. would accompany the battalion and provide the necessary supplies. Some of the supplies would be purchased on the road and the remainder taken from the store-house here. Route marching is very neh eén- joyed by the men as the mechanical become monotonous After a week's Yifle practising the battalion 'has improved wonderfully The men were first put to shooting with miniature (.22 cal.) Ross rifles at targets, three inches in diameter twenty yards distant. To put the five rounds, fired daily by each man in the battalion inside of the threa inch circle counts fifteen noints. To put the five rounds inside of the two inch circle counts twenty points. For the first part of the week a complete miss at the target wai common. On Friday the average shooting counted twenty points. and less than five per cent. of the men made complete misses. This is speaking well for the train- ing 'and' shooting qualities of the men. On Monday the men will be given a try at the service ramge us- ing service ammunition.
