'Girls of '17 Won Basketball Game Intercollegiate Debate Between Ottawa and Queen's: on Friday Evening. The inter-year championship debate, held in Convocation Hall, on Tuesday afternoon, between '15 and '17, re- sulted in a win for '17 after a close wand exciting oratorical battle. The | affirmative of the subject, "Resolved, { that local improvements in Ontario should be exempt from taxation," was taken by the sophomore team composed of J. A. Maclones and H. C. Knox. The tatives of '15, A represen A. Paoli and J. T. McQuay, in| taking the negative side, proved that the rich man's vast equipment goes untaxed under the present state of ai- fairs, while the poor man is heavily burdened with taxes. Mr. Paoli; -cit- ing Kingston as an example, stated that the improvements were valued at twice the amount of the land and both were taxed at a rate of twenty- five mills. If the tax on the up- provements was removed, a ratgof seventy-five 'mills wonld have to he struck for the land alone. The '¥7 men showed that if im- provements were exempt then all land would be built upon, and all land in the heart of our cities wauld be used for the erection of handsome struc tures.
