CONVICT JULIAN FIELD. ---- : Lady Sitwell Was Duped By This Man In Several Very Large Fimancial Pransactions -- Secured $60,000 From Her. Lord Londesborough's sister, Lady Ida Sitwell, has so frequently been held up to obloquy during the last three or four years, din connection with financial difficulties and pe- cunlary transactions in which she, was meade to appear as having ob tained sums amounting to upwards of $30,000 from an old maiden lady of the name of Miss Frances Dobbs, by something very much akin to fraud, being denounced, indeed, from the bench of the Court of King's bench for gross dishonesty, that is just be great relief to her relatives to have her good name cleared during the tecent trial of a singularly disreputable money brok- er, journalist and ex-convict, of the name of Julian Field. But while Lady Ida has been cleared of any dishonorable conduct, she stands condemned as having been a foolish and ecredulous wo- man, Being in difficulties three years ago, she was recommended to place herself in communication with Field, as a monetary agent who would discreetly. assist her to raise the funds to pay off debts which she had incurred. An interview followed, and from 'hat time forth the unfortunate lady Ida was a dupe of this plausible- fongued rogue, who represented himself as a person of independent vosition and means and a university man, who would be glad to help hex out of her difficulties, The story of the transactions in which she became involved is too complicated to relate here in detail. But after having obtained her pow. er of attorney, he secured from mo- ney-lenders and from Miss Dobbs sums amounting to some $60,000, of which she never received more than $500, but for all of which she was neld responsible. It was only when too late that she discovered that he had not de- voted a cent of the money which he obtained in her.name, to the setlement of the liabilities for which | she had appealed to him in the first Kingston's Music Hall Pianola cabinet, mahogany case, that will relieve your prese\n position of having a silent With the cabinet player, piano in your home. a You can operate your piano tc your own satisfac- tion. But, For the Time 'Being, It "Win Likely Gather by Companies At a Number of 'Divisional Points, The third contingent will likely be mobilized soon after the new year, and will consist of two bat- tations of infantry and one battali- on of mounted rifles. Evidently the political influence of the membess and their friends has been so strong that the military department. has decided to reeruit at various points throughout the division, including Peterboro, Port Hope, Cobolirg, Lindsay, Belleville, Ottawa, Corn- wall, Brockville and Smith's #alls. The men will likely be held at these points for some time and the pre- liminary drilling done. © This will, Of course, be the patronage that the places will get in connection with the enlistment. The probabilities are thit 'later on the forces will be concentrated .at the divisional head- quarters, Kington, as soon as the second contingent ge:s awry, which is not likely to occur before March. Then the third contingent can be brought here and equipped for ser- vice as the second contingent bas been. Kingston's military and civil authorities did all they possibly could to secure the forces here. Long before any outcry. was made against the 'civil authorities the mayor was in consultation with the member 'for Kingston and was working with him for the bringing of the troops here. How far these officials have sueéceeded will not be Known until a later date. While Kingston is the most desiv- dble 'place for the mobilizing and training of men, yet the political influence seems to have been so strong that the department had to capitulate to local preferences and Patronage has. had to be more widespread than it was in cbnneot- tion with either the first or second contingents. When sufficient doles have been passed out, it is gener- ally expected that the final round- up and the fnal training of the men will ocour in Kingston: meantime the clvic authorities as well as the military authorities néed not have any regrets, for every possible effort was made to secure the forces for the city, and the best possible kind of accommodation was available cacrifices being made by the City Council .and the Board of Education to make the men even more com- fortable than the second contingent has been.
