ONTO, ON STRONG DRINK Which Impairs Every Human Facul- ty--Preached In Chalmers Sun- day Morning and In Cooke's In tre Evening. Declaring that alcohol impairs ev- ery human faculty, and giving the result of scientific tests to verify his statements, Rev. Benjamin - Spence, ! Toronto, preached a forceful sermon 2,600.00 424,00 500.90! against the liquor: traffic, in Chal- mers Church on Sunday morning. The speaker gave an interesting account of the tests made. Men us- ing liquor could not lift as much as | men who did not drink; in the en- forms of activity durance tests, that of walking or run- ning, men who do not use liquor | showed up Tar better; in thé higher the same condi- | tions were found. Men using liquor {always had an idea that they could ido more work than those who did | { mot touch it, $1,300.00 i : { whole town," but this was not so. "A man who has had a few drinks has an idea that he could "lick" the added the speaker. ! But how weak, and how stupid he is. $ 2,980.00] 3 | were kind and gentle; when drink- Reference was made to the great hindrance the use of liquor was to human development, and statistics were given to show how crime could | be traced to the use of strong drink.! i All these figures could not be regard- ed as accidents, but on the other hand, they were absolutely the cause and effect. Men when not drinking ing liquor they were brutes and would commit crime which they would not think of committing when in thelr sober senses. Even the man who indulged a little in strong drink would be a much better man if he left it alone. It was the duty. of every man to be at his best, and while drinking, liquor he could not | be at his best. 'God's side is never the whiskey side of anything," declared the | speaker with great emphasis. He | went on to show how strong drink| {wags an injury on mankind; how it effected the child life and deprived { many of an education. Mr. Spence spoke of the great pro- | gress mada against the liquor forces iin the last ten years. He said there had been a great awakening,! and the good work was continuing. | There was a great world movement "in | elders, In Russia, at the present time, strong drink had been barred. All over the world it was the one great question. Mr. Spence preached in Cooke's Church on Sunday evening. Ordination Of Elders Three new elders were ordained St. Andrew's Church on Sunday morning by Rev. 8. J. M. Compton, the pastor, bringing the number up! to fifteen. T. D. Robinson, J. B. Mc- Leod and A. W. McLean are the new! In his sermon, the pastor 'reviewed the history of the Scottish 10,475.00 Church, and mentioned the fagt that {in the years gone by the position of elder in the church was much 'sought after, but in these wmiodern times ! the position had almost to be thrust upon likely men.
