Ethel Fox, a 17-year-old Canadian girl, was the principal witness in the case of the Government against Charles Dan- iels of Ogdensburg, tried hefore Jud- ge Ray and a jury in federal court here. Daniels was indicted on a charge of white slavery. The witness said that she had met Daniels two years ago ab her home in Prescott, directly across the river from Ogdensburg and the acts on which the indictment was based were committed between Christmas day, 1913, and May, 1914. Daniels was named as the father of the girl's child, born last February. Mrs. Mary Fox, her mother, corroborated her story A year iels ago last Christmas Dan- appeared at the Fox home in Prescot accompanied by his seven- year-old niece, Grace Daniels I'he child and Daniels both persuaded E hel Fox to accompany them to Og densburg which she did. She went to ~the home of Daniel's sister and later to his home. It grew too late for her to return to Prescott so she remain- ed at the Danlels home during the night.~ It was at this time she says that Daniels misused her. Their friendship, however, did not cease af ter this oécurrence and they contin- ued to meet and several months lat- er she spent a week at his home Mrs. Fox, the girl's mother, stated that she suspected no wrong until last December when she became sus- picious of her daughter's condition. A confession by the girl followed and both Ethel Fox and the mother went to the Dani liome in Ogdensburg in an effort to have Justice done. It was on this occasion that the girl learned for the first-time that Daniels was a married man an that ke had a wife living in Ogdensburg.
