OPINION IN WINNIPEG i THAT KINGSTON CLERIC WILL | BE ELECTED, { The Others Nomiupated Include Rev. Principal Baird, Manitoba Coliege, Rev. br. Neil, Toronto, and Rev. Y. Dr. Mcleod, Barrie, here in Présbyterian circles Chalmer's Church, will be chosen . moderator of the General Assembly of that chureh when it meets at Kingston in annual session Wednesday, June 2nd, pext. Other ministers nominatéd by Pres- byteries include Rev. Principal A. B. Baird, D.D., of Manitoba Collége, Winnipeg; Rev. Dr. John Neil, of Westminister Church, Toronto, ong of the mest wealthy and influental of the denomination in Canada, and Rev. Dr. McLeod, Barrie, Ont. Dp McLeod will bé the nominee of those still opposed to church union. Both Pr. Baird and Dr. Neil are regarded with extraordinary esteem in the Presbyterian communion, but neither is ambitious for the honor, and probably both will ingist on retiring ih favor of Df. Macgillivray, an older man, who has held his present charge twenty-eight years, being ordained forty years ago, Dr. McLeod, as a leading member of the church, woule naturally in course of time, receive this honor, but as representing op- position toschurch union he cannot be elected. In the matter of church union, it has been agreed that all the Presby- terdées and congregations of the church should vete on this question during the fall of the present year, and the proposal will be brought to final issue at the meeting of the General Assembly next yeédr. The {friends of tnion dre now pushing this proposal, favored by every As- sembly for the pest fen years. At the meeting in Kingston the question of church finance will nec- cessarily come in for most careful In several branches of the work of the church, as a re- sult of peeent financial depdession, there is a considerable deficit, In {| home mission work this is said to exceed $100,000 and to reach half that amount in work of social ser- vice. The Prégbyterian church has in the past generally followed the po- liey of doing the religious and philan- thropié 'Work which, in its judgment, ought to be done and trusting to its friends and members to provide the The question of retrench- fl ment must mow be faced. Jn. connection with the approach- ing Geperal Assembly of the Presby- terian Church in Canada at King: ston, Ont., & matter of Interest re- lating to the theological colleges, of which there are eight in the Domin- fon controlled by the church, will be the probable closing of the college in Vancouver, and the transfer of Rev. Dr. John McKay from that col- leg. to Manitoba College, ih Winni- pes; '6f Which he will become the i principal, : Dr, McKay formerly minister of ] Street Presbyterian Church, Montreal. He is noted for his ability 'as & public speaker, his power in debate being equal to that of any minister of the denomination, 1t is believed Dr, 'McKay will accept the jaxitation of Manitoba College, to whieh he will bring great strength. Pr. Baird has béen acting prin- "but declines, to continue, and recently was in Vanoguver conferring with Dr. McKay. t is understood that the Vancouver College will open again in a few years, when tne pre. sent financial 'stringency has passed. f.of selfishness have full sway and it will develop lew cunning. = a > Presbyterian General As-| Winnipeg, May 24.--It is thought] «| tion for.
