The society has for several years, through the kindness of its | friends, carried on a crusade against | the cruelty to animals so prevalent in the past in this city, particularly to horses, and I feel certain the pub- to has almost disappeared owing to dogs, cats and any other animals have had our care and protection. This requires money, and so far we! have been able to meet all expenses. | The ecruelties we have had to notice are mild as compared with those this war has developed, and it may be || interesting to your readers, as our friend the dog is concerned, to give them a short account of the develop- ment of the poisoned gag scheme at present in use by the German brutos, Before making use of it against the Allies, and to test its efficacy, some two hundred dogs were either pur- chased or stolen--the latter if the Crown Prince was about---from some of the villages in Belgium. A long in use at the front, the poor dogs were put in it, the gas applied, and the effect admired by the staff offi. cers present, for in a few minutes the poor brutés (I mean the dogs) were no more. Thapk goodness, the cruejties we have to deal with are nothing to this sample of Gernfan kultyr, but insignificant ds ours are, : it is our duty to stop them, and this || is what our society is trying to do, If and this is the work we wish every || person to assist -us in, Most of, us HM pride ourselves on our kindness 1 | animals.
