Given At Queen's By Prof. Macmech. an of Halifax, Archibald Macmechan, head English department in Dal- Coliege, Halifax, gave a splendid lecture with illustration on the art of J. J. Sullivan, the great| English artist, in Convocation Halll on Thursday evening. Prot. McNeifll introduced the! speaker and stated that it was a! treat for Queen's to get a man of such authority on Art, to give a lec- ture, The lecturer had been a per- sona} friend of the late Principal} coming from the same town as both Principal Grant and Princip- the » Tv} Prof. Macmechan, iu introducing his subject, said he was going to! | talk about 'a man of whom very lit. tle was known. He stated that F. J.| Sullivan was an artist of black and| | white, that is he used only the pen | to bring out all 'his effects, whereas many artists use wlor to cover the! defects. - He pointed out that Sulli-| van was an ideal book symbolist and| that he chose the difficult pictures to represent, such as the French Re- volutions and Carlyle's Sartor Re.| sartus, He is not classed with the common graphic sketches, but stands on a level and in some cases a Jit | tie above the best picture interpret- ers of modern times. | Prof. Macmechan showed many illustrations of the simple but yet unique outlines and representations of Mr. Sullivan's story pictures. The| audience highly appreciated the treat. Prof. W. G. Jordan moved a vote of thanks to Prof, Macmechan| and Prof, MacDonald seconded the| motion. ! Barn Badly Gatted. Than Provided For When They Were | Appointed Last June--The County Valnation in 1876 Cost $700, (Continued from Page 2.) At the Thursday afternoon ses- sion of the County Council, first readings were 'given these by-lawg: Granting $250 to Garden Island for ferry wharf; granting $500 a month to the Canadian Patriotic Fund for five months till Jan. 31st, 1916; pro- viding for payment of the salaries more or county and other officers. The Bank of Toronto asked that a by-law be passed authorizing the county treasurer to arrange for over drafts. This matter was referred to the Council's solicitor for report. Council adjourned at four o'clock to allow several committees to meet, and 'résumed its session at §.30 o'clock, when a recommendation of the Finance Committee that th il of the assdisment valuators, amount- to" $1,125.45, be paid, was adopted. This amount was $81.45 { more than the valuaters were to re- ceive according to the amount per day fixed by the Council at its June session for their services. How ever, as the Warden had requested {the valuators to go ahead with the work when they were going to throw it up, the Council decided that the additiénal amount for expenses was not an excessive chargé. It was pointed out that when tiie last valu- ation of the county was made for as- sessment purposes in 1876, the sum of $700 was paid. Councillor Thompson moved that hereafter the keep of all Frontenac paupers placed in the city refuges be paid by the county as whole, and not by the townships.
