He came out very strongly in favor of Union Govern- ment, stating that the duty of the electors was quite clear. In this election he pointed out it was not a case of voting for the man, but for principle and religion. The main portion of Mr. Rayner's sermon was given .over to the sub- ject, "The Papist Menace." The speaker pointed out that it was not his intention to say one word against the laity of the Roman Catholic church. His message had to deal with the hierarchy. He re- ferred to the recent case heard in Kingston, and the references Arch- bishop Sprat made regarding the local press, and took occasion to congratulate the Whig on the stand it had taken. ed that Kingston had reason to be proud of her daily newspapers.
