Dr. Taylor had freard that at one time Kingston was the cheapest ¢ity in Canada in which to Jive. The proofs to-day 'were not so evident. It was true that men engaged in professional work might be said to draw an income in the satisfaction that the labor itgell af- forded them and in the sensd of a mission that they were performing, but people #ad to live. The pro- féssoriate. was no order of celibracy or bachelordom. There were other universities on the continent, and # the members of the staff at Queen's--sought after by many suit- ors---remained faithful it was not because of any pecuniary induce- ment held.out to them.+ Dr. Taylor remarked that an increased endow- ment for Quéen's was absolutely ne- cessary. A matter which greatly concerned the welfare of the student life was thé provision of some centre for the social activities of the university. Students who, only attended classes and then hid*themselves in their Prigings were missing the greatest thing that university life had to give. The friction. of 'mind Was more valuable even than. the detall of books. Therefore a first wari was a "Union," under the roof of which there could be gathered stud- ent societies, the YM. Still if one knew what was wanted and kept steadily thinking about ihe | aniverait 8 deeds it was amazing how difficulties vanished and the seemingly impossible was realized. At the conclusion of the excellent address the dhairman called upon T. J. Rigney, J. Russell Stuart, Dr. C. C. Nash, F. G. Lockett and ex- Principal Gordon, all of whom spoke of the great advantage Queen's was to Kingston, of the loyalty of the citizens to the institution, and ex- pressing the hope that the plans for the increased endowment "would work out successfully. Dr. Gordon gave an admirable address on the Queen's spirit as evidenced 'by the service and sacrifice of its graduates and stictents. ah . The 'Anpual Report. In presénting his annual report, R. Meek, secretary, statéd that the year past had been the more difficult be- cause of the fewer men who were ay- allable. for addresses, -to keep alive the aggressive spirit in the €lub, but the inspiration which has been lack- ing from the spoken word has been more than madé up by other agen- cienv and @spec ially the. agency of the Press. Of those who have spoken under the auspices of the Club, Dr. Qriffith- Jones, of Bristol, England, began the vear, followed by E. F. B. Johnson, K.C., and Col. Wright, of Toronto, whoge discussions of passing events ----of events growing out of the great war---were very much appreciated, Several things 'interfered with the fall engagements, notably the Vie- tory War Loan and the election cam- paigns, during which the citizens were favored with speeches from rep- resentative men and men whose names were upon the selective list of the club, including , Sir Thomas White (the Finance Minister), Hon. Mr, JLynch-Staunton, and Rev. Mr. Gegegie. + The club had been fortunate in securing for the first dinner of this year Rev. Dr. Bruce Taylor, the new Principal of Queen's. He was to have addressed the club in December, but an illness, whieh the club regret- ted, delayed his. coming, and his re- ception by this 'organization had to be- postponed. - The club welcomed STROKE OF PARALYSIS Left All One Side Very Numb---Hear- ing About Others Being Cured This' Kingston Man Has Us This "Wood Cure to Great 4dvantage Mr. W. It stands for everything that is patri- otic and national in its character, and its 'members have unreservedly taken part in every campaign which has had for its object the welfare of Canada The devotion of the members to pub- lic issues, of a non-partisan kind, has brought them conspicuously be- fore the people and strengthened their hold upon the public opinion. Every citizen who has the best inter- ests of the city and country at heart should be actively identified with the Club. The example of some of the mem- bers can be fittingly followed by all. Secretary Meek said: They can in- = duce their friends to become mem; bers, and in that way widen the cir- ¢le of the blub and the service in which it is engaged.
