A rea- | taurant was refused coal for cook- ing purposes on Tuesday, as only fuel for heating could be delivered pon such an extremly cold day. There was no big rush on the fuel controller Sh Wednesday morning. | Up till nine o'clock about half al dozen orders had been issued. ! On Wednesday morning Mr. Nic<| kle issued requisitions to the people wanting coal, and they took these to} the coal dealers to have filled. | One great trouble is that of secur-| ing the delivery of the coal. Many | people who are right out of fuel will} have to secure their own vehicles to] draw it. | Churches Take Action. The churches will make every ef-| fort to economise.coal. Last night] the official boardt!of. Queen Street | Methodist Church decided to use the Sunday School room for all services| for the next two months. The League and prayer meetings will be held in; conjunction with other Methodist! churches, alternating about the| | clrurches. The meetings of other] organizations will be held at private 'homes, It is not likely that Zion Church, St. Luke's, Princess Street Meth-| odist, or the various missions can link up, as they are on the outskirts, | but they might meet in the smaller | rooms of the churches and thus avo®| eating up the auditoriums, 1 Sydenham Street Church . Saving. | It has been decided at Sydenham | Street Methodist Church to cut off| entirely all the week evening meet- | ings out of the church and the Sun- day School hall, and arrangements will be made for the holding of these { in various homes, The church will remain open only for the two ser- | vices on Sunday, and the session of | the 'Sunday School. The Sumday | School hall and lecture hall will re-| main closed. Sydenham Street would | willingly join with another eongre- | gation, but . their congregation on| Sunday night is too large to com- | bine with any other congregation. Sydenham Street, however, would gladly welcome any other congre- gation to come in with them. The | stand taken by the church will mean | the saving of a great deal of fuel. | To Close The Schools, The proposal is made. that the | schools close for the balance of Feb- ruary. This would likely lead to the saving of eighty or one hundred | tons of anthracite and soft coal. The' vacation for the pupils would not militate against their studies. It is even suggested that the Easter holi- days be used for study in view of the holidays given this month, if the Board ¢f Education so decided. If the schools do not close the hint is given that churches near to them might utilize them as they have to be kept reasonably warm on Satur. days and Sundays. Give Same Discretion. Some retail merchants declare the regulations were made to benefit the metropolitan cities, where manufac- turers, wholesalé and professional men close on Saturday at noon. In the smaller places Saturday is the merchants' best day. They feel that the government might give disere- tionary powers so that the merch-. ants in towns and small cities might | HA NL AMEDIN | | A Home Treatment Which Relieves and Cures Eczema, Salt Rheum | and Al Itching Skin Diseases, and Leaves the Skin Soft, | Smooth and Natural. The Country Club aud the Yacht Club ean only be opened on Wednes days and Saturdays. On other days of the week the coal consumption at such clubs shall be restricted to the quantity necessary to prevent dam-| age through freezing. A meeting of the board of manage- of Brock street Methodist was held Tuesday night, the fuel question was under discussion, A special committee was appointed to deal with the matter. This committee will meet and a re- port will be given in the course of a! few days. The chureh is anxious to do all that is possible to help. (Continued from Page 8.) Coming To Grand. At last the new Paralta Plays, the pick of the pictures, have arrived in Kingston. And it remained for the Grand to secure the very first one for presentation on Thursday, Fri- day and Saturday of this week. The seven-reel romance, "A Man's Man," Ndopted from the book of the same The action is swift, the story convincing and graphic, the interest cumulative, and the quality of the acting better than the average. Mr. Kerrigan is fitted with a role obviously to his liking and he makes 'an attractive hero, with his personality and screen ex- perience standing out at all times. "Love, Laughs and Lather," is the title of the extremely funny two-reel Lonesome Luke comedy which will also be shown on this big pro- gramme, Other interesting reels and an act of big-time vaudeville complete the programme that would do justice to any high-class theatre. Tyler, The piece is said to be orig- inal in conception and to afford the star a part well suited to her. abil- ity. The action takes place in New York and London and a competent company has been selected to sup- port Miss Neilson Terry. MILK PRODUCERS WILLING To Co-operate' With the Inspector, Dr: Bell Says. : Dr. G. W. Bell) milk inspector, states that he Kas found the milk producers willing to co-operate with him in order to produce pure milk and cream. There are twenty-seven vendors doing business on Kingston streets and forty stores retail milk. It is estimated that Kingston . con- sumes 6,215 quarts of milk a day. Milk is rea scarce, the inspector says, and he, knows of one vendor who buys from twenty-six dairymen, going as far as Brockville for some of it in order to gupply his custom- ers. It costs 6 1:4 cents a quart to deliver milk in bulk in Kingston, so the milk vendor has not an exces- yd -\ e EEANRERRENIN RNRENNERRENREREENN ERR PE RnR uns RR END mn : i Special $2 ™ Ladies' cushion sole laced boots and oxford ties; low rubber heels; "make good house shoes."
