George spent most of his time either with her, or talking with some gen- tlemen he knew. I curled up in tha corner of the seat and gave way to gloomy thoughts for a time. Then George came in with an armful of magazines and [ resolutely opened one and read. After luncheon, which Mrs. Collins shared, she brought her book and came in with me. I was terribly an- noyed, but pretended to be indif- ferent. "You'll excuse me, if I go right on reading?" 1 said coldly. Of course! I have an interesting story to read, also." For over two hours we sat without speaking. Then George came. in and, for the remainder of the jour- ney, he and Mrs. Collins kept up a running fire of small talk. We were to stay at the same hotel, so naturally George took charge of her luggage. "It's easy for widows to travel, if they have some other woman's hus- band to look aftér them," I thought bitterly, as I stood waiting while he hunted up a piece of her luggage which she insisted must go to the hotel with her. More Unpleasantness, "Make yourself as attractive as you can," George said as he left me. "It won't take me long to dress. I'll be back in a minute." He was gone some time. I was all dressed when he came in. The mo- ment 1 saw his face, I knew he was displeased. 'Is that what you call - te ren yhdd S404 000 Told In Twilight $$ = 3» (Continued rrom Page 3.) AT NARRAGANSETT yourself attractive?' he asked, pay- ing n> attention to the maid. + "Why---am I not all right?" 1 had selected a dress of soft, white ma- terial, a little low in the neck. It was a dress I could have worn for a home dinner. "Have you so few clothes that you must select that quakerish thing to appear in?" My eyes filled at his tone, and | turned away that he might not see the tears. "I'll change, if you ll tell me what you would like me to wear." '""There's no time to change!" (he had been dressing as he talked). "Mrs. Collins will be waiting." Mrs. Collins! Was she to eat with us, too? I glanced into the mirror. Really, 1 looked very well, I choked back the tears, dabbed my face with pow- der, again, and waited. But when 1 saw Mrs. Colling and the other women, | realized how like a school- girl 1 must look. Such elaborate costumes, I never had seen. They were like the wonderful dancing froeks in my trunks. Too elaborate for a dinner, 1 thought. "You are not dancing tonight?" Mrs. Collins asked, in oily tones, as we joined her. "Dance--is there a dance?" Of course! You never have been to the casino, George tells me; you will be charmed. I adore it!" A Why had George not told me? In- dignation flushed my cheeks, as I fol- lowed meekly behind them into the dining room. - Could he have pur- posely allowed me to remain in ig- norance. He was so proud, so im- patient with me if I were not suit- ably dressed for each and every oc- casion, that I could not understand t in THE ACTIVITIES OF WOMEN 5 The Swedish parliament has reject- eda bill for woman suffrage. Trenton, Ont., June 1.---A very in- teresting report has been received from Mrs. Pringle in regard to her recovery from partial paralysis. This was a most extreme case, for doctors had been trying for three years to find something which would restore the depleted nerve force, One can scarcely imagine stronger evidence of the restorative influence of Dr. Chase's Nerve Food. Mrs. C. Pringle, Queen street, Trenton, Ont., writes: "About five years ago I was trou- bled with my stomach, there was a soft of paralyzed feeling across it and up my Jeft side, and my heart seemed almost to stop beating. ' 1 called in the Doctor, and he thought it was symptoms of a stroke. My stomach kept getting worse. Af times the pounding would be intense, al- most unbearable, and I thought I would go wild. Sleep was out of the question. I tried different doctors, giving each one a fair trial, and doc- toring nearly three years. My case seemed to baffle them. It was a ner- vous breakdown caused by overwork and worry. During all this time I could not do any work, and my friends thought it was a matter of time how long I would live. Some one advised me to try something to build up the system, and 1 tried dif- ferent medicines. Finally 1 thought 1 would try Dr. Chase's Nerve Food, '| as the clearing house for placing wo- his not telling me about the danc-| ing. s In some way I was sure Mrs, Col- Uns was to blame. | In just what way, I couldn't figure out. But In my own mind 1 was satisfied that it was 80. 1 would not allow her to "crow over me," to use an old expression of David's. "1 shall, too, I am sure. You see I have Leen at home, always. All these things that are so familiar to you older women, are new to me, I Loo adore dancing, and {f, when vou | are having your dessert, George," --I| | turned to him---"I may be excused I will be ready by the time you have finished. I forgot that you sald we were to dance tonight." { The expression on George's face) was so comfeal, I almost laughed. | He knew as well as 1 did, that he| had said nothing about dancing--and that I had simply said what I had for a reason. He returned gravely: "Certainly, Helen. But don't keep us waiting." "Why do you change, Mrs. How- ard? You look very like a debu- tante." "But I am not a debutante. 1 am a married woman." I answered, smiling, but furious, She had called George by his first name; I, of course, was "Mrs. Howard." I caught a look of anger, as ft swept over her face, gone in a mo- ment. I had baffled her plan to have me make my first appearance at the casino in improper costume. It gave me the added courage I needed. So that, when the waiter took out salad plates, I did not wait for George to order anything more, hut rose and, again excusing myself, 1 left them.
